If they Are right countries such As Canada n7ew Zea land Britain and Nepal could be covered by ice sheets and France would look similar to Lapland. But others predict no More than a mini freeze such As Little ice age which seized Europe Between 1430 and 1850. It froze All the Rivers of Germany in 1431. Garbage cans trash and weeds do not Combine to make a very inspiring scene. Look at your own Back Lane and visualize what a whale of an improvement a few Flowers would make when planted in that two foot no Man s land Between your Fence and the paved area instead of the weeds and debris that More often than not fill in that spot. Last August when the sordid condition of Many of our lanes came to my specific attention i got into the car and toured around a number of the lanes in my area. It was an interesting experience. Some lanes were quite dowdy with Only a few sparse Flowers that looked As though they had sprung up More by Chance than design. Other lanes were co Worful for almost their full length having obviously been planted out by the homeowners. I believe that this whole idea of sprucing up our lanes is contagious. It can be a Case of follow the Leader. Why Don t you catch the Bug and be a Leader and see if a number of your neighbors will follow suit. Some of these two foot strip Lane gardens showed considerable thought and care. One of the prettiest had Blue morning glories trained up a White Fence with a Row of Pink petunias at the base. Another had a Row of Sweet peas on the Lane Side of the Fence where they received the full Benefit of the morning Sun. They had responded beautifully. Yet another household had planted out a Row of Small colourful red bedding dahlias. One easy Way to brighten up at least a Section of your Lane area would be to dig out the weeds open up the son and scatter the seeds of a few of the to grow outdoor seeded flowering annuals such As Shirley poppies Calendula Batchelor s buttons or Corn Flowers. They will come up in no time to brighten up the area All summer Long. To establish a More or less permanent two foot Flower Border that will come up each Spring with no trouble except a Little cultivation other homeowners have planted biennial hollyhocks along their Fence line. These plants seed themselves so readily that there Are always new plants and masses of stately Bloom year after year. The single varieties Are the hardiest and Best to seed in this location. The hardiest and most persistently flowering Plant i be Ever grown and one which is Ideal for such a location is a Small perennial Sunflower growing in clumps to about three feet High with continuous masses of two to three Inch Daisy like Bright yellow Flowers. They also seed themselves most readily. The Morden Lathrum is another Hardy and Good perennial that gave a colourful display along a number of lanes i traversed. I suggest the Morden Pink or Rose selection As they Are much More colourful than the original purple variety two or three plants Are All you need for a Start As they readily Root from cuttings. Small partic Clarily from new growth will Root in water in not much More than a week. Their slender spikes rising to about four feet in height Are very attractive. They also most definitely have a place in your own Flower Border. There were quite a few Day lilies in the lanes. If you set out this Long lasting perennial the roots Are actually clumps of Small tubers make sure their location is reasonably sunny and they will Bloom year after year with Little attention. The leaves of this perennial Are strap like and Bright Green with Flowers clustered on tall stalks set Well above the attractive foliage. The individual Flowers on Day lilies Are rather fleeting but new blooms continue to open throughout the whole summer so there is always a Good display there Are newer varieties with Pink Apricot and red dish Brown Flowers some with attractive Throat Mark Ings. Try some of these or the hardier old fashioned yellow Orange or Tawny flowered varieties in your perennial Border As Well As in the Lane. The Day lilies Down my Lane have had quite a life Span. I brought the original plants from Southern on Tario to Winnipeg in 1913. Since then my surplus plants have sort of wandered Down our Lane to add their Beauty for the whole distance. There Are also two Hardy native climbers that will do Well on your Back Fence. They Are the River Banc grape and the Virginia creeper. I have Virginia creeper on my Fence. The Riverbank grape has Large attractive leaves with Bunches of Small bluish grapes in september. The fruit is edible and Birds love it. The male and female Flowers Are borne on separate plants so one of each is needed to produce fruit. These vines Are readily available at local Plant nurseries. Or.
