A statement of concern 9 regarding proposed repeal of Section 68 3 Manitoba labour relations act the increasing Militancy and disregard for Christian standards of Justice among Many Canadian unions has caused increasing numbers of persons to ask for the right to stay out of unions and withhold their dues from such unions. Section 68 3 of the Manitoba labour relations act guaranteed that right. Now the Manitoba government intends to repeal that Section and replace it with one which will allow Only that conscientious objectors to Union membership May stay out of a Union where there is a closed shop agreement but not withhold from it the Union dues. This is a serious loss of human and civil rights. No one should be forced to support with his finances a Union to which he is in genuine conscience opposed. For Many mennonite christians and for a Large portion of the broader Christian Community the adversary concept accepted almost universally by both unions and Many management people is a very serious concern. They do not wish to be forced to support either through financial contributions or membership a Union which will use Force and intimidation against someone else. They do not wish to take part in movements which place their own interests above the interests of the sick the aged or the disadvantaged As has so frequently happened recently. They choose rather to follow the teachings of Christ and the Bible. I this statement is directed to the legislators of this province and to the Public. We urge that serious consideration be Given to the concerns of workers in Many industries who wish to live by their conscience in their place of daily work. The right of free association the right to work without interference the right of free exercise of one s religious convictions ought to be carefully guarded. The new labour legislation win not guarantee those rights As Well As the previous legislation did.
