October 25, 1976 Tyler show s dignity stripped by Bill Granger Chicago san times second thoughts on the new television season the Mary Tyler Moore show has plummeted dramatically in Quality this season its last. The shows Aren t nearly As sophisticated or funny As in past seasons. In additon the writers have decided to strip various characters of dignity for the Sake of cheap yuks. In episode 1. Lou Grant insults Mary Richards Over and Over because she suggested he was overweight. It is difficult to explain but the steady Stream of sarcasm directed at miss Moore is out of character. So too is the liberation of sue Ann Betty in previous years she was a Sharp ton Gued Witch whose repartee had subtlety her sex drive also was subjected to scrutiny but the character did t strip Down As she did in the third episode this season her bedroom was straight out of Hollywood script writer s in Many Small ways the show has fallen apart Ted Baxter has been Given a Loi of unfunny liner.
