Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 30, 1976, Winnipeg, Manitoba 4 Winnipeg free press saturday october 30. 1976 labor official ordered out of Bolivia Marcel Pepin told to leave la Paz a Marcel Pepin president of the world federation o f labor and former head of Quebec s con federation of National Trade unions has been accused of making subversive remarks about Bolivia s Mil itary government and or dered to leave the country it was reported Friday. Local representatives of the Belgium based labor federa Tion said the action was taken after Pepin held a news con Ference at a la Paz hotel wednesday. Authorities banned the local news Media from reporting Pepin s statements saying they were a Call for worker Pepin told the conference that bolivians exiled in Chile Are being subjected to the most inhumane treatment federation representatives said. He also said there is no press Freedom in adding the federation would begin a Campaign to restore human rights in Bolivia and secure the return of bolivians exiled in Chile the officials reported. Tape recordings of the news conference were seized by government Security agents and several federation delegates were detained the representatives said. There was a report in Mon Treal that Pepin had been arrested but it was not con firmed Here. Bolivian delegates said Pepin who arrived Here Sun Day had planned to leave thursday but they did not know if he had departed. Government authorities declined comment. Pepin tried without Success to meet with officials of the bolivian labor ministry be fore holding the news Confer ence the bolivian representatives said. They said Pepin met wit i officials from various labor groups Here and told them that at a recent meeting i Venezuela Union leaders suggested he visit Bolivia to investigate the Banning of labor unions and alleged violations of human rights. He and two other Canadian Union leaders spent four months in jail in 1972 after being convicted of contempt of court for advising Quebec government workers to defy legislation ordering them to end a Public service strike. The situation in the rest of the country follows in Saskatchewan about 450 workers at five extend care nursing Homes returned to work tuesday ending a strike which began oct. 15.
