Rev. Ernest Skublics National clerical vice president of the anglican Council for the Faith said the meeting was planned because some considerable numbers of anglicans believe this to be outside the competence of the anglican Church on its own to decide. It s or. Skublics said but what it boils Down to is those anglicans across the country ref use to accept the legitimacy of this without consensus among All the Catholic the term Catholic in this context he said refers to churches such As the roman Catholic anglican orthodox and old Catholic churches which have retained the gos Pel from the Early apostolic Church without essential alteration. These churches Are usually governed by Bishops priests and deacons. The general Synod of the anglican Church of Canada approved the ordination of women in 1975. Approval from Rupert s land ecclesiastical province of which Manitoba is a part came in november 1976, and Mani t o b a s first four women priests were ordained in Early january. Both the general and pro v i n c i a 1 synods passed a conscience clause permit Ting anglicans to reject positions which coerce his or her this allows Bishops clergy and laymen to refuse to associate with women priests without suf Fering penalties. The decision to hold next week s meeting ties in with the conscience clause. Or. Skublics said one thing which might be discussed is the establishment of one Church in the City where people who Don t agree with the Church s decision could meet. This would allow them to worship without compromising their beliefs. This first meeting would be kind of an occasion where people who Are of this mind could meet and discuss whether this is indeed what they would want to he said. He added the meeting was being held with the Bishop s approval. Most of us Don t object to women priests because we believe women can t do the he said. It s because this has been something that has been the undivided tradition of the Church for years we Are not sure this is part of g o d i plan or whether we Are giving in to some sort of secular pres sure from women s libera or. Skublics said that if the Catholic churches were Able to reach a consensus on the ordination of women Many of those now opposed to the decision would be Able to accept it. However said when the other Catholic churches were questioned about the ordination of women the responses were negative. He said the roman orthodox and anglican churches had been growing closer and closer together. We re building up to the restoration of this Unity. It seems tragic to us to do something which All the churches said we cannot do this introduces a Brand new stumbling Block in the process of women s ordination is Only one of the changes that have come about in the Church in the last decade that will be discussed at the meeting he said. Among the concerns Felt by some members he said is the increasing ease with which divorcees can remarry and attempts to authorize non Episco Pally ordained ministers of other denominations to celebrate the mass or the eucharist.
