Manitoba Hydro had to inv port nine times More electricity from Power Compa Nies in the United states to meet demands in december than it did for the same month a year ago. Hydro officials also said 1976 was the first year the Utility has had to import More Power than its exported. They blame an unusually dry summer a cold Winter and Low water Levels for the deficit. Last month. Manitoba Hydro imported 103 million kilowatt hours of electricity compared with 12 million Kil Owatt hours in december 1975. Exports for the same month dropped 178 million kilowatt hours in 1976. Earl Mills director of pub Lic affairs for Hydro said the Utility began cutting Back its commitments to Export electricity in August when the dry spell began to appear serious. He said Hydro has been progressively increasing its imports to meet demand since then. He said that unless water Levels improve drastically imports could exceed exports into the sum Mer. Or. Mills added that Hydro is not worried about producing enough Power to meet demand next Winter since it expects to be producing More by then. Manitoban set a record Manitoban set a record for electrical consumption earlier this month but Mani Toba Hydro officials predict that if temperatures dip to last month s lows consumption could Peak again at an even higher level.
