Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 21, 1977, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press monday february 21, 1977 a review daredevils leave audience smiling by Hal Doran the Ozark in Natsin dare devils left a capacity play House theatre audience satiated and smiling in their first Winnipeg appearance saturday night. Appearing before the daredevils on the Bill was Jonathan Edwards and band another first timer for Winnipeg audiences whose performance was also Well received by the exuberant but generally Well behaved crowd composed mostly of people in their late teens and 20s. The daredevils Hail from Southern Missouri and North Ern Arkansas an area not otherwise noted for producing major contemporary bands. More than geographical origins helps to make them unique however. The group s eclecticism of styles and musical skills not to mention the size of the group itself eight sets the daredevils somewhat apart from the mainstream. Their performance at the playhouse gave a fairly representative sampling of the diverse tastes and abilities to be found on their four a and m albums to Date. A fifth album will be recorded at Caribou ranch in Colorado this May from electrified hoedown tunes with Bluegrass Over tones homemade wine and baked potatoes to Slick Laid Back Ballad easy rockers such As Larry Lee s you know like i know and spaceship Orion s eagles Beach boy tight harmonies the daredevils put the Audi ence through a variety of paces As it clapped and stomped enthusiastically with the fast uns and drifted into pleasant reverie with the slower ballads. I n addition to the in Strumental contrast of fiddles mandolin Banjo and Mouth Bow with keyboard intricacies the daredevils also occasionally delved into blues oriented licks follow ing the Lead of Harp player Steve not to mention More than Little fairly heavy duty Rock on which Lead guitarist Rune Walle stood out. The Core of the group or. Cash John Dillon guitar Larry Lee Drums and Mike Supe Granda Bass who kept a very solid Bottom going throughout have been together for about four years. They do most of the writing for the group which relies almost totally on Origi Nal material. The other band members or. Walle Jerry Mills mandolin Rue 11 Chappell keyboards and Steve Cana Day guitar have been with the daredevils a year or less. Despite the relative newness of half of its members and the fact that the group and its equipment completely filled the play review University s Grad choir displays a Fine balance by Ronald Gibson As part of its Centenary activities die University of Manitoba school of music presented the Grad choir in recital at the Eva Clare Hall sunday afternoon. The Audi ence was rather skis i but the Quality of the performance was quite High. John standing was the conductor s n d Dic Tisar Schir Sacker was the accompanist. The impression gained from the singing was that of a body of some 30 singers a very pleasant tone and a surprisingly Good balance consider ing that there were Only two tenors to balance eight Bass and ten sopranos. The program opened with six arrangements of folksong three by Hugh Roberton the others by John standing w. H. Andersen and Guslav hoist. Time has shown a certain preciousness about Roberton s arrange ments but they Are effective and except for a slightly syllabic feeling in Caleno culture me there was Fine Security and Good cording. Horo my nut Brown Jaiden was also effective but suffered from too Many verses. I love my love arranged by hoist was the most effective As Well As ambitious piece. The Tenor tune lines were quite Lovely. Indeed the men were a hit More sensitive in this than the women. Igor Stravinsky s sym phony of psalms requires an orchestra minus upper strings As Well As two pianos. In this performance we had two pianos Stewart Thomson joining or. Schmuecker. It was difficult to realize that the opening psalm was in latin because diction was not very pointed and the choir s re sources were taxed to the limit after the Fine incisive attack on psalm 38, there some anxiety in psalm 39 and pitch was not above suspicion on occasion so that the alleluia in psalm 15 sounded a Little Uncertain. This was courageous but hardly the grandeur of Stra Vinsky s Conception. The final choral item was the Polo Visian dances from Borodino s Prince Igor. This attractive music has most of is interest in the or c h e s t r a 1 part where the color and excitement of its rhythms and texture predominate. The orchestral part .3 u ism m hardly a. Substitute for an or Chestra but at the hands of Dietmar Schmuecker it was a tour do Force. The Diorus had some admirable Cli maxes but we missed Boro Dinc s firm colors. Or. Schmuecker assisted the program by playing Scriabin s fourth piano so Nata. This work with its Eso Teric mysticism sounds a bit j birr ii us Liow when produced at the begin n i n g of this Century. It sounded quite effective Par Ticu Wariy in is flex ung pres to. House stage the daredevils manoeuvre smoothly and successfully through a number of personnel and instrumentation logistical changes during the course of the concert. Occasionally the sound mixer from Carlo sound out of Nashville would be a slight step or two behind the changes but this along with some feedback from time to time was really the Only source of irritation in an otherwise excellent presentation. As the kick off Date in a whirlwind eight Day seven City Western Canadian tour organized by Springfield productions of Calgary Satur Day night was most gratify ing for the daredevils who had High Praise for the Winnipeg audience and Lor the playhouse facility. Jonathan Edwards w h o will also be opening for the daredevils in Saskatoon and a Gina commander Cody and Foster child will fill the Bill for the Alberta and .
