L 1 j hobbies by q. S. Reycraft a number of House plants such As the rubber Plant Dracaena and die Fen Bachia can grow too Large or lose their lower leaves. When this happens readers often write in asking if there is any Way of reducing the height of the plants particularly when their lower leaves Are gone. I received such a letter just last week asking about an overgrown rubber Plant that had not Only grown too tall but also had dropped most of its lower leaves. The Best Way to handle such plants is to air layer them. Air layering is a simple operation carried out on the old Plant where it normally stands in the House. No need to haul it Down to the basement. The end result is a new compact Plant of Plant too tall shorten it by air layering the height you want nurtured by a select a spot on the Stem at the hormone rooting a Norw _. This product definitely aids Root development of All cuttings of plants material. It is Avail Able at any Garden Centre enclose the Cut Stem area in a Ball of peat Moss As soon As possible after making the Cut. To do this take a double handful of Moss and pack it firmly in a Ball around the Cut area. Now take the piece of polyethylene and wrap it firmly around this Ball twisting the ends around the Stem and holding them in place at the top and Button with twist Ems. Keep the Moss Ball around the Cut evenly moist during the rooting period which could be several months. Then when you can see six or More roots through the Clear polyethylene emerging from the Moss Ball remove this covering and sever the main Stem just below the Moss. Now take this upper rooted Section of the old Plant and without disturbing the Moss Ball and new roots Plant it in a five or six Inch pot with drainage material in the Bottom and filled with a mixture of one half peat Moss and one half Good potting soil. I prefer a Clay pot for its extra weight and stability in holding the Plant upright. After potting the new Plant should be kept in As moist an atmosphere As possible until it has has a Chance to establish itself. This can be done by misting it daily or if it in t too Large by putting a Clear plastic bag Over it. You need not discard the Bottom part of the old Plant. Cut it Back to about a four Inch stub and the chances Are that new growth will develop on this stub. I air layered a rubber Plant several years ago Cut the old Plant Back to a stub and today it is a Good looking Plant More than two feet tall and doing very Well. So far no one has been Able to Tell me whether this new perforating has found its Way into the Stock of the philatelic service at Ottawa with or without plate blocks. Obviously it has t been recognized by the Post office As having philatelic significance As copies found so far have either been used or received at regu Lar Post office wickets. Coming at the end of the use of this particular series the variety is quite Likely to be scarce and valued at a Premium. Changes of this Type have generally not been recognized by the Post office As of significance to the collector this has been resented by a great number of those who patronize the philatelic service Section. The change in Perfo rations is considered to be of major importance by specialists in Canadian Stamps and of a Type that should be particularly noted. The Post office is also misting an excellent Way of Rais ing a considerable Money for the Post office in the Sale of matched plate blocks Plain blocks singles and first Day covers by not making note of these changes.
