Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 12, 1977, Winnipeg, Manitoba Iso Philips dem6 Sale a Low. If you would like to see How a Pockel memo will fit into your pocket and your business Call for a Demontra 786-6611 National typewriter office equipment co. Ltd. 639 Portage at Sherbrook lion. Winnipeg free press sports saturday March 12, 1977 pages 71-92 before you buy any car drive a Volvo a. Matthon motors Ltd. 574 Erin St. At Portage 5 blocks East of Polo Park 7u-349i How so dims Hal Sigurdson sports editor we become salesmen and cab Drivers electricians and accountants housewives and sports writers but somewhere buried in our psyches there must be this unfulfilled desire to marshal the creation of a major building project. How else do you explain All these closet contractors who keep popping up and every one of them claims to have the answer to providing Winnipeg with a Brand spanking new Arena. We have All Learned perhaps More than we really care to know about Al Golden s thoughts on the subject. We wait with varying degrees of eagerness to see those thoughts translated into bricks and mortar. Or at least a Good sized Hole in the ground. Golden however is far from our Only budding builder. One gathers great West life May have an other Arena proposal simmering somewhere on a Back Burner. Various aldermen Are sizing up the feasibility of adding More seats to our present Arena. The other Day an Earnest Chap called to say he could t under stand Why somebody did t simply put a roof Over Winnipeg stadium and flood it thus creating a Mas Sive Arena and a domed stadium in one master stroke. The week s mail is certain to include at least one More scheme on How the deed can be accomplished. Some even make some sense. One came from a person who chose not to reveal his or her identity. The writer s notion suggested costs could be financed through the Sale of equity shares one third to the City one third to the business Community one third to the general Public. Like Golden the writer suggested financing could include Sale of first refusal rights on each individual seat but proposes such rights should be sold for an average of Only apiece. 11 is not an unreasonable idea. Most Arenas Are built with borrowed Money. Paying the interest is what has turned Many of them into White elephants. An intelligently and imaginatively run debt free Arena should make Money. The writer suggests investors could reasonably expect a Good return on their investment. That could be True. Percy Downton the manager Winnipeg Arena has turned a profit every year since it opened in 1955. And there Are those who claim it could be kept busier than it is. Remember too. That in a lot of those years there was no professional hockey team As a major Revenue producing tenant. Sooner or later some plan will actually be converted into Concrete and steel. It would be Nice if it happened before the City is again left without a professional hockey team. To keep the jets i d say we have a maximum of two years to actually get started. And far less than that to make up our minds on How we re going to do it. Close Unes Why is everyone picking on poor old Luy vintners just because he s slow moving does t have much to say and is 45 years old All three Are obvious attributes not defects and maybe the skip of . Driscoll a ridged a Back hand shot under Daley after Ron Chipperfield left the puck when sandwiched by Ford and Miller. T thought we played a near perfect said jets coach Bobby Kromm.
