Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 03, 1978, Winnipeg, Manitoba Alice Krueger on eds future As Federal election fever picks up across the so does the speculation in Manitoba Over who is going to be in the running one of the most persistent rumours is that former premiered Schreyer will desert the provincial new democratic party to run As a Liberal its a Rumor that just wont seem to go despite schreyers Adamant denials he has any such and Hes becoming More and More angry that it keeps popping one of the reasons it remains alive is1 because As rumours it is probably one of the More believable ones making the observers of schreyers political career have often argued that the former Manitoba nip Premier is in the wrong party he int a True socialist at rather a Small i Liberal in so some people conclude that it be a difficult transition for Schreyer to they also look at the past relationship Between Schreyer and prime minister Trudeau and the fact that there has always been Mutual admiration and respect Between the two and the prime minister has made no secret of the fact that he would Welcome Schreyer to join him in but the persistent Rumor is More than just Media As Schreyer Lloyd who is heading the Federal liberals election efforts in confirmed this week that talks have taken place Between Liberal party officials and Schreyer in an attempt to lure him to run for the party in the forthcoming Federal he said two Federal seats Are under consideration by they Are Boniface and the new Riding of Winnipeg Birds which takes in the former pre Miers provincial Riding of his candidacy in Boniface would be contingent on the rumoured appointment of Revenue minister Joseph Guay to the the liberals made their pitch to Schreyer sometime before and they Are said to have come away with the feeling that he was since there have been further talks with people close to but first the next so the Story is a meeting Between prime minister Trudeau and Schreyer and the possibility of a commitment from the pm to give Schreyer the Energy All of if Schreyer is still interested and if he can get elected and if the Trudeau government is returned to a Promise to make Schreyer Federal Energy minister int All that farfetched after if Jack Horner can get a Cabinet Why not the Energy portfolio would be right up schreyers Given his intense interest in the Given the Choice Between being a provincial opposition Leader for the next four years or a senior minister in he Federal who would blame Schreyer if he chooses the Hes already made Clear he Doest relish the Job of opposition but in an interview he also made it abundantly Clear that Hes not interested in running federally he insists there is absolutely no basis for the Specula i Haven spoken to anyone in he when i i said i go from provincial to Federal there was some discussion four or five months ago about sitting on the National Unity task and this has somehow been translated into something Schreyer is getting fed up with such its not Only its something More than its completely without for some that message has yet to get through to the virtually every session of the provincial legislature sees at least one major protest March to liven things up on the coming session promises to have its with at least two groups already serving notice they plan to March on the the Manitoba federation of labor is organizing a pressure Campaign to protest High unemployment in the which includes a March on the legislature sometime in the second planned for March is by the newly formed coalition for rent controls which will fight to retain and strengthen rent controls in spokesmen for the coalition said the group was in response to apparent pressure by landlords to end rent controls and to indications that the conservative government is phasing out the they say Many tenants have not received the rent rebates ordered by the rent review Agency because their landlords went to court rather than pay the
