Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 21, 1978, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg free press Friday april 21, 1978 11 letters to the editor amnesty International replies sheepish Manitoban Sterling Lyon is trying to pull the Wool Over the eyes of sheepish Manitoban. He claims the former govern ment was leading the Public into the poor House. You or. Lyon Are heading them for the Slaughter House. Or. Lyon had barely sat Down in the Premier s chair when he gave Back million to the few millionaires who were being taxed by Means of the succession and gift tax. He thought the taxpayers would not notice if he also gave a two per cent Cut for Small businesses and a few dollars to the Farmers who were entitled to Mineral acreage tax. This worked so Well or. Lyon has now raised the minimum exemption of to under the corporation capital gains tax along with the partial sales lax reduction on insulation material and Mobile Homes. To accomplish his Mil lion give away or give Back in november or. Lyon has had to Cut and slash every social service or program that we had under the Previ Ous government. These restraints have saved us million. He gave Back million in tax cuts and saved us million blaming the nip for the difference. By changing the style of accounting lumping capital and current together or. Lyon is trying to convince the taxpayer that Manitoba is in the unique position of being broke and operating on a deficit. Or. Lyon is willing to in Campaign Promise so now it is going to Cost per Day for our already overburdened senior citizens to slay in nursing Homes. This latest action in these Ries of restraint has led me to believe Llinat you cannot be Lieve a tory Promise. No Way. The progressive conservative candidate in Point Douglas in last year s provincial election stated directly that nursing Home rates not be increased under a conservative administration that construction of new nursing Homes would begin immediately and that senior citizens would receive some Relief from property taxes and would be exempt from school taxes. Well nursing Home rates have increased there seems to be no increase in the num Ber of nursing Home care units in this province and senior citizens still have to hear the Burden of High prop erty taxes and education taxes. And do not hand me that rebate for senior citizens that Don Craik tried to peddle As Relief when everyone knows that by cutting Back on Grants to the City As the Lyon government did the City was forced to raise property taxes substantially wiping out a Good portion of that for the senior Citi zen and hurting All of us other taxpayers. Don Marks Winnipeg protest i have been a progressive conservative for Many years but by god if the present government does anything to affect the old age pensioner i for one will do everything possible Ball them. What Are they trying to do kill these defenceless human beings with worry and get them out of their hair they should be ashamed of them selves to even think of an increase against the people who built our society and want to spend their remain ing years months or Days with dignity. God bless them they get Little As it is. I. Hardy Winnipeg thanks we would like to thank the kind and thoughtful doctor and nurses who were on duty at the emergency Ward in Pine Falls Hospital on March ii. We were out visiting at my brother s Cabin at Lake Wani Mcgow when my Nephew broke his leg. Sender and Clairmont family Winnipeg scramble the aut Opac ome let in spite of the Mil lion which went into the tax payers pockets last year million enough to re store the imposed restraints in order to give us Freedom of How Many people realize that aut Opac is free insurance coverage with a tax covering operation expenses paid Only by Automo bile owners How can you let a private company compete without it costing you the taxpayer More Why should Manitoban pay More to keep in line with other prov inces or. Lyon is hiding in the skirt of the task Force. He is playing games with the peo ple of Manitoba and this task Force is a Shock absorber for the bumpy Road ahead when his Cabinet legislates More changes. They Are trying to convince the people of Mani Toba that they Are bankrupt and their Only recourse is to sell their souls to private investors. Where does that leave labor unless the working Force of Manitoba fights Back we Are going to be forced to accept the lower wages with a lower Standard of living and be at the Beck and Call of a few Multi National millionaires. Is. Ii. Thomasson Winnipeg your april 8 editorial on amnesty International was profoundly disheartening to me. I had always believed that the free press was genuinely opposed to violations of human rights around the world. Yet the paper is Mak ing a determined Effort to discredit the one Organiza Tion which is effectively fighting the torture and imprisonment of political prisoners wherever they May be. The free press suggests that amnesty International is ideologically supportive of left Wing governments and therefore ignores their violations of human rights while concentrating on Chile South Africa Argentina and other right Wing regimes. In fact amnesty s strength continues to be its neutrality and objectivity. Each amnesty group around the world carries on correspondence on behalf of three prisoners of conscience in All letters to the editor must Bear the name Tele phone number and address of the writer. Addresses will not be publish co but Only signed correspondence will be used. Names of writers will not be withheld. All letters May be edited for length general interest and Good taste. No open letters or copies of let ters to persons or institutions will be published. Distinct regimes one West Ern one communist and one third world. In the Case of Winnipeg s amnesty group we Are responsible for a Pris Oner in Rhodesia Somalia third and until recently when he was released a prisoner in the soviet Union. Each month amnesty appeals to its Mem Bers world wide to write to offending governments in support of three specific prisoners chosen on a Simi Lar Cross ideological basis. I would add that in no Case does amnesty adopt As a prisoner of conscience some one who has advocated or committed violence. How broadly does am Nesty cast its net i have before me amnesty s three most recent bulletins for the months of january february and March 1978. They contain reports on the Fol lowing countries Bangladesh Bermuda Bolivia Brazil Bulgaria Congo Cuba Czechoslovakia East timor Egypt Al Salvador equatorial Guinea Haiti in Donesia Iran Israel Kenya Mexico Morocco Namibia Nepal Nicaragua Pakistan Paraguay Philippines Poland Singapore South Afri Ca South Korea Sudan Syria Taiwan Tanzania Tunisia Turkey u.s.s.r., u.s.a., Vietnam West Ger Many and Yugoslavia. As Well the bulletins con Tain More general discussion of torture and capital punish ment. This is a formidable list indicative i Hope of the impartiality of amnesty As Well As the breadth of its concern. It is True that problems remain in investigating cases in Many countries particularly Cambodia China and similarly closed totalitarian societies. Am Nesty has built its reputation on solid factual reporting and it is exceedingly difficult to get solid information out of countries which Are completely Cut off from outside Contact As is the Case in Cambodia and most of China. Nevertheless i know from my conversations with members of the amnesty secretariat in London that the organization is concentrating More of its limited resources on studies of these very regimes even though there is a Scarcity of information from some of the world s coun tries the fact remains that we have ample information from Many other places. There is plenty of evidence for example that Kidnap Ping murder and torture often aimed at jews really does take place on a wide scale in Argentina South Africa really is built on a foundation of systematic oppression the . Really does ship its Many religious and political dissenters off to mental asylums and labor Camps. Amnesty International is actively opposed to All these practices. I would like to think that the free press is too. Unfortunately judging from the evidence your paper prefers to spend its time worrying about sup posed ideological imbalances in an organization genuinely dedicated to Freedom.
