Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 6, 1978, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg free May 1978 letters to the editor University funding a controversial topic in Manitoba today is government cutbacks on funds for Post secondary already the two Winnipeg universities have increased their student fees and Brandon University will be forced to follow not Only Are student fees but the Price of everything such As food and is also going student Aid is tightening and summer jobs for students Are also becoming on top of All added pressure on family income is preventing parents from paying for their childrens Way through As a Many students May be deterred from returning to University this should this actually the increased Revenue from the higher student fees will not be what it is expected to and even More programs that Are vital to the life of a Small such As will be these courses which Are important but which also traditionally have a Low enrolment May be Dis continued because of an even smaller number of students attending it was reported in the March 30 Issue of the free press that the president from the University of Mani said that this poor increase in funding is going to have a serious especially on Low in come he also said that if these restraints Are carried universities will be Able to maintain the Quality and extent of their Premier Lyon however that an increase of would not keep anyone out of Peter Menzies of the National of students said that the Atlantic provinces and Alberta have received increased education Grants of eight per cent and in Ontario of up to per in Manitoba we got two per Why i do not have All the but there must be some Way in which the two sides involved Here can come to an of it is not All the fault of the if the province has less Money with which to then someone must but the restraints on the universities do seem to More established the students demonstrations May have seemed like one Hundred dollars does not sound like very but to someone going to every Dollar must be accounted for and an unexpected increase of comes As quite a Premier Lyon did not seem very concerned with the plight of these people and i think that he could have Given them a Little More of his he did not directly answer their but instead said that he would discuss any problems that arose with the presidents of the three universities at a meeting later on in the a statement like this is not very Shelley Milliken unfair and biased the free press of april 27 contained an article by Manfred Jager concerning a report prepared for the Board of mount Carmel clinic on the Day care Centre program and the Day Hospital How Jager obtained a copy of this internal report before it had been discussed by the Board is of less Conse Quence than his selective extraction of parts of the report which appears calculated to highlight criticism of the role of the executive at its meeting of april 27 the mount Carmel As its first order of unanimously expressed sup port for the Board took this action because of what it perceived to be the biased and inaccurate report in the free when contacted by the including following the Board meeting on april i emphasized that he Board of mount Carmel clinic had unanimously expressed its support for other members of the press seemed to have no difficulty in understand ing this but jagers further report on april while covering Many did not report the boards it is regrettable that the reporting of this matter by the free press has been less than fair to Ross or objective about All the i know you Are in the business of Selling newspapers but is there still not a place for fair and objective report even if it sometimes makes Dull Reading pc chairman of the Board mount Carmel clinic Winnipeg mount Carmel protest As a family physician who has been a Volunteer at the mount Carmel clinic for the past 20 i want to pro test vigorously at the manner in which you handled the mount Carmel clinic you singled out Anne Ross and belittled her in a frontage i have been Active As chairman of the medical committee and of the building and planning committee and have worked very closely on any and All projects which our executive yet when chairman of the gave you a statement that the Board of directors Are very concerned with the manner in which the press treated Ross and voted unanimously to support her As the executive director of mount Carmel Jager ignored that As consider her one of the outstanding individuals in her she is dedicated and her integrity is she has built a clinic that has been regarded As the most outstanding of its she has Given unstinting by of herself to All who needed Blouw Winnipeg scoops psychiatric committal howling about reductions the nip was elected in 1969 by a in its first term in office the nip government brought in some excellent then the government got carried away with grandiose ideas of How to make Manitoba a bet Ter place in which to the net result the mess we now find ourselves the tories were elected on a platform of cutting the civil cutting Back on government expenditure and re organization of this they have proceeded to my they have not gone far on the subject of medical the nip Larry when minister of health was very concerned about rising medi Cal Desjardins publicly stated there must be restraint and did manage to hold costs Down in a Small the tories have taken the Bull by the no mat Ter How unpopular it May Are making the medical peo ple do a Little the universities have been living in a dream world in recent years and it is High time they came Down to one has Only to look at the Campus of the u of m to see How University thanks in part to the Federal has gone Over operation and maintenance costs that the prov Ince Are stuck with Are horrendous but have to be therefore let those that Are using the facilities pay for same to a greater extent than they now As a Mani Toba i resent very much using my tax Money to subsidize foreign students their fees should be double what a Manitoban the nip is making a big Issue of tax reductions to business and the few people in Manitoba Lucky enough to have enough wealth to pay death and succession so what in eight years of nip aside from Money losing Crown Cor their taxation policies did nothing to attract new new capital or anything else to no Large or poor or is going to invest Money if they cannot get a decent return on their in the various municipal mount Carmel patient i am angry at the Way Manfred Jager has criticized Anne Ross with so much people put hard work into the mount Carmel i have Only been coming Here for a Short time and their to Are quite my wife feels the same if you realize How Many people come Here in one working you would not be Able to do it to is trying her hardest to keep things together Here at mount did you really take a Good look or was it just a glance the staff does have a great Deal of if you tried to take away the government who will take care of these people so they stopped the enlargement of the clinic to me and Many others that was not Good for Ross has her hands full trying to keep this clinic going with so Little she should be praised not kicked in the Teeth i feel she is doing a very Good if Ross wanted to she could say to Heck with it from what i hear from the staff and she is running things the Best she can on As if help at you people seem to have things All Down i read your paper but to me you had Ross convicted and sentenced before she was even Able to say her i May be one of Many to write in but it is what i feel and i am sure Many others feel the same As i Daryle Falland Winnipeg Fry Doug Sneyd particularly the City of Winnipeg Are doing a lot of howling about reductions in provincial the various municipal people knew the tories were going to Cut Back if but there seems to be if any attempt at restraint at the municipal while i am inclined to agree that cuts in the civil though badly need have not been directed in the right a lot More cuts Are needed amongst Middle manage ment than in the lower eche this is an area where Large sums of Money can be if saving Money is the there has been enough groaning and talk ing done by now is the time for us All to get behind the government that was elected by the majority of Mccarthy Pranita perhaps homosexual peo ple will be unhappy when they find out what great and wonderful crowds we had at both the convention Centre and Calvary Temple on april 30 to hear and enjoy Anita she is very happily married to a Man and likes it that Way i believe the few that Hung around the Legisla Tive buildings protesting against her visit did not do what they had hoped to i believe that she is a wonder Ful person and her husband to put her life on the and really Tell it like it it is really too bad there Are not More people that will not be afraid to speak up for what they believe is right in gods Clairmont Winnipeg Leviticus 18 i was to say the on april 28 when i was watching 24 hours on the news headline was Anita Bryant and her crusade against they had people from different in Terest groups telling their views on the among these was a minister from a Church in i was so angered by what he said that i failed to get his name or the Church he was affiliated he said that nowhere in the Bible did god say that homosexuality was i am no but maybe if he would read Leviticus 18 verses and he would know Terence Bergmann whereas across the world individuals and organizations Are developing mechanisms for preserving the rights of people involuntarily committed to psychiatric inst All Giffor Jones can suggest is to maintain the present Ontario system whereby one physician not necessarily a psychiatrist must spend a minute signing committal documents every 30 rather than bemoan the fact that so called civil libertarians Are requesting that committed patients be assessed every 72 Giffor Jones should study the relevant issues concerning forced incarceration being taken up by organizations such As amnesty the world medical association and Many patient rights a medical commission established by amnesty International in Paris in Decem included among recommendations for ethical codes of medical conduct that physicians should diligently avoid abuse of their special Power to commit persons to mental hospitals As a Means of avoiding due prices of the commission also suggested that prisoners and others held against their will shall have the right of free Access to physicians of their own at a recent International seminar sponsored by amnesty in a special working group of psychiatrists that there should be a compulsory conference Between the psychiatrist administering treatment and an Independent psychiatrists were warned to spend More time talking to the particular patient in a declaration of Tokyo of the world medical in article states where a prisoner refused nourish ment and is considered by the doctor As capable of forming an in impaired and ratio Nal judgment concerning important As the measures being demanded to protect committed a is an understanding of the reason for the existence of the powerful tool of involuntary some psychiatrists and citizens Analyse involuntary committal As a Means by which the representing the interests of the few who control removes people who deviate from established social and political with this understanding one does not need to look beyond the Borders of Canada to View institutional psychiatrists As agents of a repressive state a perspective that will blow a storm across not the new Breeze de scribed by Philip my love chaos outside she looked so innocent beautifully laugh shaking singing of love for god and her songs were some times even her music was her personal Story of a god who dramatically stepped into verses like proverbs righteousness exalts a a but sin is a reproach to any we hear the Prince of peace teaching blessed Are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be Matthew is it not the Bible Calls its readers to righteous weirdest group these homosexuals who demand All these rights Are the weirdest group they go around perverting them selves and others and they want Protection so that they can do this these people carry signs such As Jesus loves the Gays True Christ loves but he is still the god of Wrath and judgment and these homosexuals who put on the front of being saved christians Are going to Wake up some Day and find them selves burning in they say homosexual ism is All that the Bible says nothing of what were Sodom and Commorah about these societal the proliferation of pornography and licence for All sex Ual perversion she would probably have been invited to University campuses and they would make a restricted movie of her but when a person presents a platform As dangerous As righteousness and Orange she needs Security Austin Stouffer Brian Hadley pilates new friends As i pondered the recent visit to our fair City by Anita Bryant a few truths were again impressed upon my mind with Stark reality and in living the first thing that came out very clearly was that the preach ing of righteousness is As unpopular to some people today As it was to this is proof again that human nature has not changed since the shouting by the group in front of the convention Centre on that sunny sunday afternoon seemed to be the reverberating echoes of that Large crowd that shouted crucify him outside pilates court on the Memora ble Day nearly 2000 years the Devil under a cloak of using the jealous religious leaders of that tried his utmost to thwart gods there is a striking similarity Here As As i read of some so called minis ters taking part in this in As Loving a Way As i know i would like to sound a warning to those who Are opposed to hearing today that there is such a thing As Ever since the men used of the Devil have tried to stamp out or Stop the spread of they have never succeeded because Jesus said upon this Rock i build my Church and the Gates of hell shall not prevail against John Blatz Winnipeg coverage disturbing Long before Anita Bryant Green came to our fair the Misnomer if i Ever saw one were out drumming up support and Antanita letters were appearing in the free it is disturbing to note the free press lending its support in publicizing the 300 protesters in headlines and pictures while almost ignoring the fact that thousands attended the programs in the convention Centre and Calvary Temple in support of this courageous the protesters incorrectly claim she has a hate Campaign going against when in fact she is doing what All christians should be but Are christians do not hate the but hate the sin of and rightfully the Bible plainly states that homosexuality is an abomination to god is not Only the god of love As it is popularly preached in our pulpits he is also the god of As the Reading of his word we Are warned in Leviticus that homosexuality is punishable by Sodom was destroyed because of this sin in the new we find it Means spiritual death and no Hope of eternal life with read the first chapter of romans in its entirety and you will find our Long suffering god does lose patience with those who do not obey his word in such matters for he gave them Over to a reprobate it is appalling that so Many group leaders Are ignorant or the word of god and Are leading their people to eternal according to the article in the free Walter president of cupe local 2034 Rhian spokesman for the Manitoba Young new democratic party Heather spokesman for the coalition reverend professor of psychology at the University of Manitoba All support the they should do a bit of research in the Bible and get Back on the if the Gays have their Way and our Federal and provincial leaders legislate Laws to protect their special the Laws of god will not be we will not be judged by the Laws of but by a just Stevens Winnipeg
