Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 9, 1978, Winnipeg, Manitoba 52 Winnipeg free press tuesday May letters to the editor upset by coverage i was very upset to discover the great disparity be tween the free press and the Tribune on the reporting of the statement issued by the chairman of the Board of the mount Carmel clinic As a response to the attack on the clinic and its director Anne Ross which gained front Page coverage in the free press on april 27. Considering the emphasis Given to the negative aspects of an internal report written for the consideration by the Board especially those aspects referring to the director Anne Ross the omission by Manfred Jager of such significant statements by the chairman of the Board to the effect that the Board had Given its unanimous support to its executive director and was concerned with the Way the Media had treated Anne Ross can Only Lead one to believe that the free press reporter was deliberately biased. I was always brought up to believe in the democratic tradition of the Freedom of the press. This belief was predicated on the Ideal that the reporter s responsibility would be to remain impartial and would report news and happenings As they occurred. I am aware that on the editorial Page personal views of editors can be expressed. However i find it strange and upsetting that a reporter such As Manfred Jager should take it upon himself to edit a statement in such a Way that its meaning and intent was twisted so As to conform with his obviously biased and Petty beliefs. I feel that the editors of the paper should perhaps make the policy Clear As to the function and role of a reporter so that people such As Jager should begin to fulfil the role of an objective re Porter rather than to use the Media to promulgate his own prejudices. Winnipeg let her be heard it takes All kinds of people to make a world and Anita Bryant is one of them. She has burdened herself with a crusade of the first kind the insatiable desire society of homosexuality and what it signifies. She is undoubtedly not alone in her beliefs of what constitutes an extreme immorality among the sexes. If it is a threatening lifestyle and unwholesome to society it should be outlawed by court procedures. However Anita Bryant has the right to be heard without Sanction and subversive activities against her particularly against her life. Democracy could not survive without Freedom of speech especially in a world surrounded by degradation and social ignorance. Ail people have an aversion it seems of one kind or another and while god created humanity in Many forms he will be the prosecutor the judge and the jury pertaining to All mortal sin. Nicholas Lewadnyj Winnipeg reply of Centre pro metric the decision for Canada to go metric was made by Parlia ment in 1970 with the support of All political parties. This decision was subsequently endorsed by each of the provincial governments in Canada. The conversion to metric docs cause some temporary inconvenience and some one time additional costs but the Long term benefits Are substantial. Winnipeg orly Ericsen to he government of Canada has introduced the employment tax credit program to stimulate employment in the private sector by providing a tax rebate for business. Here s How it works. 1. If an employer expands his Normal work Force by hiring an unemployed person through a. Canada manpower Canada employment Centre and the Job has been created As a direct result of the employment tax credit program the business is eligible to claim the tax rebate. 2. Almost any business that s been in operation for More than one year is eligible. 3. The rebate is calculated at or per hour. This rate is determined by the Geo graphic area of which the new employee will be working. 4. The rebate is deductible from Federal income taxes payable but must be added to the business s taxable income. Unused amounts May be carried Forward for up to five years. 5. A claim May be made for up to 40 hours work a week for each new employee for a period of up to nine months. 6. Each new Job must be full time. Nor Mally no less than 35 hours a week. And that s it essentially. The program has been designed to work with a mini mum of red tape. All employers should by now have received a Booklet that gives all1 the details of the program. If it has not been received employers should Contact a local Canada Man Power employment Centre. The employment tax credit a program. It s ready to go to work for Canada. And for you. Employment and immigration Canada Emp Loiet immigration Canada Bud Cullen minister Bud Cullen ministre vb3221 the article published by the free press on May entitled deficit haunts elderly Agency by John Sullivan has presented incorrect facts in regard to both the age and Opportunity Centre inc. And to the meeting held with the finance committee of City Council. The Agency wants to clarify its position in regard to its presentation and some facts about the meeting. The age and Opportunity Centre inc. Is asking for support from the City of 000 for 1978. Last year the Centre received although has been requested. The Centre is not paying the salaries listed in your column and indeed is paying salaries at the same level As 1977. No changes have been made. There will Only be salary changes when the operation budgets Are confirmed and when negotiations with local 2140 of the cupe have been completed. Changes in salary Levels through this procedure Are being initiated this year. When referring to changes the writer failed to hear that ask ing budgets were being discussed not operations budgets. It should also be stated that the Board of directors of the Centre As a voluntary Board expressed to the finance committee concern about the fact that there is a growing number of retired persons in Winni Peg Many of whom Are directly Active in the operation of the age and Opportunity Centre inc. With the growth in the num Ber of senior citizens it is important that planners and founders recognize the elderly and provide them with their just share of the social service delivery Dollar. At the meeting i also addressed the fact that the elderly user of services has always contributed monetarily to the Centre through individual memberships and through meet ing the costs of materials in some programs. I would like to comment also on the under standing atmosphere of the meeting. There was a Mutual acceptance of the financial difficulties of the times As Well As a recognition of the need for restraints in the manage ment and delivery of services and programs. Certainly the committee did not "balk1 at the request but indicated interest in finding a Way to support operations and to Lessen the deficit. Clearly or. Sullivan reported out text and without regard to the general atmosphere of the meeting. It is our concern that such incorrect information can influence Public understanding of the work of the Centre. Mrs. L. Bercuson president Board of directors age Opportunity Centre Winnipeg mount Carmel staff As staff presently employed at the mount Carmel clinic we feel compelled to respond to the recent press criticisms of the clinic p policies programs and administration. The mount Carmel clinic founded in 1926, has evolved into a Well established Community a pall clinic providing comprehensive patient care . Medical care prescriptions dental care and social services. Under extremely cramped conditions the clinic staff provides these services to anyone requiring them. While a Large proportion of our patients come from the Core area of the we do see people from All Over Winnipeg and the province. Many of our patients have extreme social and economic problems. Therefore the staff is faced with the tremendous Challenge of meeting the needs of this particular Type of patient . Ensuring that patients keep medical appointments pc and Post Natal education Home visiting nutrition counselling. These services arc also available in Spanish to new immigrants. In fact Many patients come to us As referrals from other health and social agencies which were unable to Deal with them effectively. Without the determination and persistence of each staff member including our executive director mrs. Anne this clinic would not be Able to offer the Many services which currently Are available to our patients. Collectively we greatly appreciate mrs. Ross Energy and imagination in obtaining the necessary resources enabling us to carry out our responsibilities in a professional Way. Through this letter we want to inform All your readers that we support mrs. Ross As administrator of mount Carmel clinic. A Virgol Sini Sun representing staff committee mount Carmel clinic Winnipeg Royal Hudson recently the Royal Hudson steam train visited Winnipeg for two Days. I spent a very enjoyable two Days observing the exhibit photographing the train and listening to and looking at a real car Royal Hudson. As Well As wishing to thank the train Crew and the prov Ince of . For this Opportunity i As a rail fan would like to thank the up rail really Bent Over backwards to allow us to get our pictures and sound recordings even when we were in the Way of things. They were at All times courteous and Friendly. Paul Smith Winnipeg v offended i As an employee of mount Carmel clinic for three years take great offence at the vicious attack made on our executive director mrs. Ann Ross. Contrary insinuations made i by no Means feel stifled or unable to Dis cuss any matter with her. Ann Ross has dedicated Al most 30 years to the under privileged a feat to which no one else can make claim. This dedication has earned my greatest respect. Cecile Dion Winnipeg satisfied i think the mount Carmel is teaching the kids. My Little girl Elizabeth Raven goes there and she has Learned a lot. If the health sciences Centre takes Over i will not Send my kids there. Airs. Ina Raven Winnipeg at Mcdonald s you might and probably have been to Mcdonald s. Mcdonald s people Are Friendly but do they have to put up with Cigar and cigarette Burns on the tables today i saw a table was re moved probably because of damage writing on the Booth scats and also some tears in the seats. Do they have to put up with hat David Ruml Winnipeg inaccurate travel articles i am sure that Many of your readers like myself derive much pleasure from the travel articles in your weekend edition even if one has no expectation of visiting the places described it is very enjoyable to read about them especially during the dark Days of Winter when holidays seem far away. In fairness to your readers however you should warn them that you have now started to print spoof Arti cles for Gael Katz s description of a whirlwind tour through Britain near Rode through night. To Pant Road Winnipeg Manitoba. R2j os2 april 29 cannot be anything else. The kind of tour she recommends would Lead Only to disappointment frustration and exhaustion for an overseas visitor. To illustrate what i mean several of the places mentioned cannot be reached by rail so do not try to use the British rail pass it is Good value for Money but not meant for this kind of tour. Coventry is an Industrial City the size of Winnipeg it has the famous new Cathe dral which is certainly Worth a visit but nobody in his or her senses would Call it if you drive As directed South from Salisbury in the Hope of reaching Oxford you will be disappointed even if you do not land up in the sea fortunately the locals speak English and one of them will no doubt Point you in the right direction due North was Gael Katz standing on her head by i would feel very sorry for any Canadian visitor who after seeing Oxford and the cotswolds went out of his Way to visit Stoke on Trent Newcastle under Lyme or Sheffield these Are All centres of manufacturing there is no Point in going there. The goods they manufacture can of course be bought in any Large shop Ping Centre. History said Henry Ford is bunk and it Proba Bly does not matter that the victorian Brighton Pavil Ion was built before Queen Victoria was born or that the druids had nothing to do with stonehenge. But it raises doubts on Gael Katz s source of information. I have not been Able to Check on the Story of the night Riding vicar of Dymchurch but it sounds More like enterprising help to the famous smugglers than opposition to forces of conscription. Tourists ought to be warned that they will find themselves unpopular if they refer to places like Ely As a Community where a Cathedral is located is entitled to Call itself not merely a but a and residents Are proud of the Honor. So i could continue but there is no Point in trying to Correct the whole article. I await with great interest the further travelogues promised to us on London and Wales will Gael Katz extol the fascinating purchases to be made in Woolworth stores of Rotherhithe Tottenham and tooting or write dream ily of the peace of Cardiff arms Park on a saturday afternoon fortunately i imagine most of your readers have More sense than to take such writing seriously but i do wonder Why you waste space on material apparently com piled with the Aid of an old Grade 8 geography textbook and some wild imagination. There is plenty of Good literature available which tells a prospective visitor what is Worth seeing in Britain and How to see it. Or. Felix m. Arscott Winnipeg ;
