John Havlicek canadians proving too much for Leafs Toronto up toe Blake after watching Montreal canadians throttle to Ronto 6-1 saturday night to take a 3-0 Lead in their Stanley cup Semi final with the Leafs produced a statement that would have made the late baseball Hall of Famer Casey Stengel master of the double talk proud. Blake elder statesman of the canadians Hierarchy who has been around the National hockey league club since the 1930s As player and coach before assuming the duties of a Semi official advisor observed i m just Happy that we Don t have to play the smiling Gladiator was expressing what in fact the Leafs were feeling As they prepared for tonight s fourth game in the Best of seven series at the gardens. It s not that Leafs Lack the Effort in this All Canadian showdown. They just Aren t Able to contain the Montreal attack that explodes from the opening face off and persists until the canadians have either assumed the Lead or left their opponents in a state of exhaustion. Toronto one of the Best conditioned teams in the nil does t have the depth to Cope with the canadians. They seemed tired to said Mon Teal s All Star right Winger Guy Lafleur. Toronto meanwhile has played Mon Treal without the services of All Star de fender Borje calming out for the duration of the season with an Eye injury suffered in the islanders series calming is to Toronto what Larry Robinson another Norris trophy candidate As the league s outstanding defence Man is to the Cana Diens. More so because Toronto lacks Montreal s depth along the Elueline. Now they be had to play recent games without rugged Dave Tiger Williams who can usually be counted on to stir things up when Leafs need motivating. He s gone with a knee injury. Montreal defence Man Guy Lapointe s. Status remains a question Mark until just before game time. He dropped by the Montreal forum to watch his teammates work out monday. It s a Day to Day he conceded so i probably won t know my situation until like another former Montreal great goaltender Jacques Plante Lapointe Fig ures Toronto to be his Jinx town after the two painful injuries at Maple Leaf Gar Dens this year. Plante invariably begged off playing Here with a legendary allergy attack that cropped up game Days. Maybe on my next contract i la ask them to write in a clause that i Don t have to play in Lapointe quipped. Only once in eight meetings with the canadians this season has Toronto been allowed to score the first goal. That was in the opening game of the Semi final series which turned into a 5-3 Montreal Victory. It s been like that All Neilson commented adding with a half hearted attempt at jesting they Montreal Aren t a bad Guy Lapointe a question Mark Hobie 12 special Purchase 7 Only of this super 12" class Sailboat. Players from both team complaining spectrum ice surface a Sticky problem Philadelphia up the ice surface at the spec Trum has come under criticism by both Boston Bruins and Philadelphia flyers As they continue their National hockey league Best of seven Semi final series. Both coaches complained about it sunday night and it was not much better monday As both teams worked out in preparation for tonight s fourth game. They have a problem Here and they have to Cio something about said Philadelphia defence Man Jimmy Watson. Maybe it was the change in weather and the humidity but it Al most feels Tike sandpaper out there. The ice normally is pretty Good Here. It hurts both teams now though. You have to work a lot harder because you have to work just to skate. The puck does t slide along the ice Well so los s harder to handle it. You have harder you have to concentrate both teams May have some changes for tonight s contest. The speculation while the teams worked out was that Boston coach Don Cherry might switch goal tenders for the fourth game putting Veteran Gerry Cheevers Back. Neither Cheevers nor Ron Grahame who played Sun Day night knew who would be starting in the game Al though if Cheevers s sore knee is All right Cherry will most Likely go with him. Cheevers had a six game winning Streak going against Philadelphia including four games in last year s Semi final series and the first two games of this Spring s set. The flyers came with a Strong for checking style against the Bruins some thing cheery expected them to do and something he expects again tonight. They always for Check Well at Home. Actually they for Check Well All the time. The flyers Montreal and maybe us Are the Best fore checking clubs in the league. Watson noted that the game sunday night featured the same Type of play that has been the style Between the two teams during the last few years. They always have been close scoring he said. It s usually exciting hockey. It s aggressive and it s played hard by both teams we had t beaten them in six games until sunday night. I m glad we finally won. Last summer we had a lot of time to think after they had beaten us in four straight. It was not a Nice Watson admitted. Boston defence Man Brad Park said the Bruins had to work on a couple of things for the fourth game. Pm. 247-489 time out with Maurice Smith it was Back in 1936, almost at the beginning of what eventually turned out to be a four year sojourn in England that we attended the English football association cup final at Wembley stadium. More than fanatical soccer fans were there to witness and enjoy a classic match Between Preston North end whose lineup was dominated by scots Man and Wolverhampton wanderers. Although the game took place 42 years ago we can still remember writing Back to Winnipeg that without question it was the most exciting sports spectacle we had Ever seen. A lot of water has passed under the Bridge since then but to this Day that statement still holds. Perhaps it was because it brought Back Many fond me Mories but watching the 1978 renewal of the a cup Between Ipswich town and Arsenal on the television screen saturday proved almost As enjoyable As when we were on the scene at Wembley those Many years ago. There is something special about the a cup final that we have never experienced at any other sporting event. One is gripped by the excitement generated by the huge crowd the moment you walk into Wembley stadium. The continuous Roar and singing of the supporters of the competing teams and the Flag waving does something to you. While one could not Call saturday s match a great one since the favored Arsenal gunners apparently did not play up to Par it was nevertheless dramatic and entertaining with the outcome in doubt until five minutes before full time. There was no question underdog Ipswich town play ing in the final for the first time in the Long history of the club was for its Victory. Except for the first minute or so they carried the play to the famed gunners of Highbury throughout the contest with an outstanding and Complete team Effort. Yet time and again until Roger Osborne scored the Only goal it appeared Victory might be denied them. Twice once in each half Ipswich Sharp shooters hit the goalpost with the Arsenal goalkeeper completely beaten and on another occasion the crossbar. Little wonder the frustrated manager of the Ipswich team after one near goal pointed his Finger to the sky As if to indicate that the Man upstairs was smiling on Arsenal. A Young Man named Brian Talbot who at one time played soccer in Canada for Toronto Metros enjoyed an outstand ing afternoon for Ipswich town. But then one might Well say the same about each of the 11 men who carried the Blue and White Ipswich colors into Wembley. Finally after the match Well bet two of Wembley s Best know pubs greyhound and the Green Man Well known hangouts for the Canadian hockey players when that sport was popular in Wembley were packed with supporters of both teams either celebrating or drowning their sorrows in Good English Beer. That elusive organization known As the Passwa incorporated shooters society of Friendly Fellows held its 15th annual game dinner at the Winnipeg Squash club last wednesday. Needless to say it was the usual rousing affair thanks to the hard work of guv John Baldner head Flunky Gerry Dennehy Diamond Jim Ashdown Art Tooley and Sammy Zubro to name Only a few. No doubt Many were troubled with upset stomachs the next Day As result of Over indulging in such delicious food As game Pic Rainbow Trout Walleye clams of slurs Gold Eye mallards and Caribou All of which or. Dennehy managing to scrounge one Way or another. Even the sarcastic Charlie Joyce who made a special trip from Toronto to attend was complimentary. Back in january 1973, some 150 Manitoba athletes representing 10 different sports spent an enjoyable two weeks in Curacao one of six islands comprising the Netherland Antilles. There they enjoyed Competition against athletes of that former dutch Republic. Now five years later the visit is to be returned. Sufficient funds have been raised to Send 20 Amateur swimmers and water Polo players to Winnipeg for Friendly compete ton against local athletes. The visitors will arrive in Winnipeg june 2 and remain until june 18. Mean time accommodation and transportation is required. Anyone who can provide either should get in touch with Guy Simonis organizer of the trip to Curacao at 175-0880. And it s Happy birthday greetings to Jack Wells. The third game is in Guelph on wednesday. Fan forum dear sir it has come to my attention that our City Council has instituted a Blanket reservation system for two of the Public Golf courses Kildonan and Windsor Park. This allows a few privileged people to enjoy the benefits of a private Golf club at the expense of the general Public. I can t accept the fact that As a taxpayer i am being refused admittance to a Public Golf course every saturday and sunday morning of the entire Golf season. If such a system were necessary for economic reasons which i Don t believe it is then All interested golfers should have an equal Chance at this reservation system. The present method allows those golfers who had reservations the Previ Ous year to renew their option which of course they do every year. I urge All golfers who resent this unfair system to Contact their City councillors and get the Public Golf courses Public again. For your information. Emfs truly pm me Mcl 345 Royal ave ;
