He served As Premier of Italy five times Between 1963 and 1976 and his influence was Felt most in the behind the scenes bargaining that characterizes the byzantine style politics of this country. Moro 61, was known to most italians for his Navy Blue and Grey double breasted suits a Streak of Silver across his dark close cropped hair and for his Long and often enigmatic speeches. But politicians Hung on his words for signs which Way Moro s dominant Christian Democrat party and therefore Italy was moving. The party backed by the roman Catholic Church led All italian governments since the second world War but Moro was a realist and Sens ing shifting pol ucal winds helped him Engineer two of the country s most important political deals. One was an opening to the left in 1963, bringing the socialist party into a govern ment coalition. The second 15 years later was an agree ment with the communists giving the parly a greater voice in government policy but denying them a place in the government itself. But unlike most of his con temporaries Moro was essentially a private Man stiff in Public appearances and eschewing the rounds of handshaking with potential voters on the stump. He rarely gave interviews. He was famous for his stamina in the backroom a methodical politician who could preside at a 10-hour Cabinet meeting without a Glass or water or cup of cof fee. He simply wore out his rivals. But Moro had another Side seen by Only those close to him. Even As Premier he kept up his classes in Law at the University of Rome holding exams regularly and making himself available for advice. He was More than a pro Fessor above All a said one of his students. In addition to serving As Premier Moro was his party s president in its most crucial period after the 1976 elections. Italy s communist party the largest in the West won 34 per cent of the votes just four percentage Points Back of the Christian democrats making it impossible for them to govern without leftist support. Faced with communist de mands for a share of Power and the threatened revolt by one third of the party s parliamentary deputies if the communists won out Moro began laborious bargaining that lasted nearly two months and resulted in a Compromise formula. The communists agreed to support the government directly for the first time in 31 years in return for in creased influence. But they dropped their immediate de Mand for Cabinet seats. He was considered a Lead ing candidate for the largely ceremonial Post of president of Italy. He was a devout roman Catholic who took communion every morning. He met Elonora Ciavarelli at a meeting of Catholic student leaders before the War and they were married in 19-15. They had three daughters and a son.
