All the same the service says it May not be a Good idea to stand around on your Balcony during an electrical storm. Q. What caused last thursday s storm a. Very warm unstable air travelling up Down and sideways from the Southwest was the main reason for the storm which was close to touching off a Tornado. Wind damage was caused by cold air Rushing to replace warm air that was rising rapidly into Cloud Thunder Heads. Those thunderhead were cumulonimbus Clouds. It is estimated that a severe thunderstorm like last thursday s has More Power than a nuclear bomb. Hail first starts As falling droplets of rain. If they Are Light enough they Are caught in an air up draft and will Rise above freezing level thundercloud often reach the the rain freezes and grows in size with each subsequent movement in an up draft. The Hail that fell last thursday was of the Cluster Type. Individual hailstones froze together to form Golf Ball sized beavers. Last thursday s storm produced 60.2 Milli metres of rain. Q. What is Ball lightning a. Ball lightning is the rarest and least understood form of lightning. It consists of a Reddish Luminous Ball in the order of one foot in diameter. It will fall to the ground to explode or can also travel along the ground exploding when it Bangs into an object. While hissing noises emanate from Ball lightning it May explode noisily or noiselessly. It usually lasts three to five seconds and is not considered dangerous. It has been produced in the Laboratory. Some scientists Don t be Lieve it exists but some reports of it have been from sources too reliable to discount. Pictures of Ball Light Ning also exist. Q. Is it True that lightning actually strikes from the ground up a. It May. A lightning Bolt moves from a charged object a Cloud loan object the ground with the opposite charge. The Channel the lightning will follow established at the Start of the discharge and this Channel is the path of least resistance from the charge source Cloud to the charge Centre that is the initial path of an electrical spark in a storm. A secondary Bolt of lightning May discharge from the ground up and it involves residual ions left in the air after the Leader lightning Bolt has passed. A ground to Cloud discharge is called a return Streamer. Q. How much variation is there Between tempera Tures at Portage and main and at the Airport a. The Airport is where the Federal climatology ser vice docs measuring but the temperature there is not always the same As at Portage and main. An Independent study done in november 1952, showed that the temperature at Portage and main was about six degrees warmer at one Point than at the Airport. Winds Are responsible for mixing up air to make temperatures Over a Broad area the same when there Little wind there is Little mixing and variation can occur. Q. What do the terms weather Waich weather warning and Tornado warning mean a. A weather watch indicates that severe weather could be forthcoming and although not a forecast it makes us aware of the possibility of damaging Hail Strong gusts of wind and heavy rain. It is issued usually five or six hours before a storm and should put people on the Lookout for weather warnings. A weather warn ing is the next step up. When it is issued there is evidence that damaging weather conditions including Hail Strong winds and heavy rain do exist. People should take precautions for their own safety when a weather warning is issued in their area. Weathermen Are Lucky to get a weather warning out an hour before a storm hits.
