June 3.1978 up Pho about 50 employees of members of parliament take to the streets for Kay in to protest against pay raises. Commons workers walk out Over raises Ottawa up about 50 secretaries researchers and others who work for members of parliament abandoned their desks for the pave ment outside the commons Friday protesting pay increases they say Are too Little to cover rising living costs. The increases announced wednesday by commons speaker James Jerome cover about House employees guards Mes sengers administrative staff Jani tors and parliamentary pages As Well As secretaries and re searchers. None belongs to a Union. The increases were arranged by Jerome and other members of a House committee on internal econ omy. The wage increase formula adopted by Jerome is designed to raise pay for some employees while keeping a tighter rein on others. An attempt was made to keep the in creases in line with pay guides set by the government for raises to Public servants. In the commons Walter Baker progressive conservative House Leader said parliamentary staff morale has been Hurt by the selective and mysterious manner in which the in creases were decided. Some of the raises Are about six per cent. Others Are Lump sum raises. The two researchers Al Lowed each of the 264 maps for in stance have been Given raises bringing their maximum annual pay to spokesmen for members of maps staff have described the increases As an insult.
