Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 19, 1978, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday july 19, 1978 bruising Battle in Montreal als give Argos the Bounce Nick Bastaja clears the Way for Toronto running Back Terry Metcalf up photo Montreal up Montreal Alou ettes Defeated Toronto argonauts 30-23 in what was billed As a Canadian football league contest tuesday night but an affair that at times bore More resemblance to a pier-6 Brawl than a sporting event after the Halfway Mark. The Victory left both clubs with a 1-1 record and apparently re kindled a fire on both sides in a Long standing Eastern football conference rivalry that dates Back several years. Late in the fourth Quarter Larry Brame a Toronto linebacker and defensive end Wayne Smith of the Argos were ejected from the game. As Early As halftime the referee had to keep the two sides apart As they made their Way to their respective dressing rooms. Joe Barnes went almost All the Way it quarterback for the winners and engineered touchdowns in the first third and fourth quarters. He scored the initial touchdown him self on a 12-Yard run to the right Corner heaved an 18-Yard pass to Chuck Mcmann in the third and handed off to John o Leary for a one Yard run in the fourth. Sure footed Don Sweet converted All three Montreal majors. In addition he kicked a 37-Yard Field goal in second Quarter and added two More three pointers from 12 and 19 Yards in the final period. The als led 7-0 after the first Quarter 10-3 at the half and 17-9 after 15 minutes of play. They managed to keep highly touted running Back Terry Metcalf obtained by the argonauts from the National football league St. Louis cardinals shut Down for most of the night. In the first three quarters of play the Only Toronto scoring came from the toe of Ian Sunter. Sunter kicked Field goals of 35 Yards in the second Quarter 47 and 34 in the third and then converted to Ronto s two touchdowns in the final 13 minutes of play. The argonauts and Ace quarterback Chuck Ealey had been stymied All night in their efforts to put a major score on the Board. When they did it was a Case of too Little too late. Ealey who had been running for his life from the Strong pass defence thrown up by the als front four finally connected with wide receiver Dwight Edwards on a 71-Yard pass and run play for his first major. That was at and it was not until 10 minutes later that Ealey managed a four Yard pass to Mike Bragagnolo for the second six Points. The Argos had been thrown off stride when shortly after the Ealey to Edwards bomb Montreal punter Wally Buono faked a third Down kick and instead completed a pass to Little Ian mofford on the Toronto 32 Yard line. Although coach Leo Cahill of the Argos and running Back John o Leary of the als did not classify it As an Overly rough contest the final penalty statistics showed that Toronto had been assessed 182 Yards for 21 infractions while Montreal lost 155 Yards to penal ties on 15 occasions. The final statistics showed just How effectively the als had shut Down met calf. He gained 28 Yards on 13 carries with his longest gain 10 Yards. He did t catch a pass All night. Montreal put together a total offence of 368 Yards compared to 281 for the losers. The als had nine first Downs on the ground and 10 in the air while Toronto was seven and six. Ealey completed 11 of 21 passes and had no interceptions while Barnes was Good on 13 of 26 but lost three to Alert Toronto defenders. O Leary led All Montreal Ball carriers with 15 carries and 69 Yards and also caught two passes for 78 Yards the latter statistic equalling that of Edwards who caught the Ball twice for 78 Yards.
