The recommendation was made to the civic administration by Winni Peg s streets and transportation Divi Sion transit planner j. P. Kohut said monday. He said the facilities intended to be the first of their kind in Winni Peg would Cost up to each and would be constructed on City owned properties at Portage Avenue and Sturgeon Road and at Henderson Highway and Douglas Avenue. Kohut described a Park and ride installation As essentially a parking lot with electrical outlets lighting some Type of heated shelter and maybe landscaping benches and planters to make it pleasant for peo ple while waiting for a a rudimentary Park and ride ser vice has been in operation at Garden City shopping Centre since january but transit officials said it does not involve the investment of City funds or personnel. The two proposed facilities would be serviced by downtown express buses during Peak morning and afternoon transit periods and would each accommodate about 100 vehicles initially More if demand War rants Kohut said. Cost estimates Are still being pre pared but typical Park and ride installations average to a stall compared to a parking stall in downtown Winnipeg Kohut said. If approved by the civic administration the recommendation will be forwarded to Council s standing committees for consideration in the 1979 capital spending estimates Early next year. The division is not recommending a user fee since that would require a policy decision by Council but is preparing a list of fee options for councillors to pick and chose among Kohut said. The shopping Centre has set aside space for 300 vehicles and promises a free car boosting service in win Ter. The race will begin Jan. 22, in the natural amphitheatre of the Winnipeg area flood Basin. Machines up to two years old will be allowed and repairs and maintenance will be allowed for 30 minutes on each of the four Days of the race. Weiss said with a maxium of 225 machines allowed this year competitors should get their applications in Early.
