If you re a voter in St. Boniface you May have gotten a Handbill in big bold letters offering the follow ing intriguing Challenge Reward for irrefutable evidence that any political administration knows How to effect solutions to major social prob the list of social problems includes every conceivable ill plague ing the Canadian Economy today among them crime unemployment monetary instability rising taxes escalating National debt slums and drug abuse. In the Fine print at the Bottom of the Handbill is the name of an organization called Technocracy inc., and naturally Davidson is hop ing people will be curious enough to ask what it is. Technocracy inc. Is a Little known group whose Basic belief is that politicians Are All Over their Heads. That no matter How Well intentioned not one of them is competent to administer the complexities of modern society. Davidson is one of its local adherents and while he s ready to put up the in Reward Money if someone comes up with the Evi Dence he s convinced hell never have to pay up. How did he arrive at the figure of the 78 cents is a code for 1978. The has to do with the approximate geographic Loca Tion of Winnipeg he s also convinced the demo cratic free Enterprise system is in a state of near collapse and that no politician regardless of his or her political Stripe can pull the coun try out of its present mess. His solution Well in the wonder Ful world of Technocracy there would be no government no politicians no taxes no Money less work and everyone would have an income equivalent to a Day. The existing Price system As we know it would be abolished and the reins of government would he handed Over to an elite order of scientists and technologists. Technocracy was originally a . Organization of engineers scientists and economists which in 1918-19 under the name of the tech Nical Alliance and direction of Howard Scott predicted North America was headed for a collapse of its economic social and political systems. All this was based on the rate at which we were consuming non renewable resources. Initial Survey of these resources took place in 1920. It gained momentum during the depression and spread into Canada in the 1930s. The organization was outlawed for a period during the last War. But somehow it continues to sur Vive and Given another Adverse turn of circumstances the organization apparently expects a renew Al of interest in Technocracy. Technocrats Don t like to talk about How Many members they have but estimates of today s membership in Canada put it at less than about 15 Are thought to be in Winnipeg. At first hand it probably looks like an eccentric s idea but with me this is not a Davidson a 63-year-old retired landlord said of his Reward scheme. Although an Active and Long time believer in Technocracy Davidson does t try to preach or push his theory. Hell Send you literature but Only if you ask for it. The handbills he had printed were delivered in some parts of St. Vital and South Dale by his grandson but Davidson says it s still too Early to Tell what the response will be. But he s obviously grown used to a sceptical society apathy is amazingly he said. A huh for democracy. The sys tem May not be perfect but just think if it weren t for democracy with its Freedom of expression and Freedom of the press and All that we might never hear about Guys like Davidson. In a tech Nate that s what they Call their new we might not be that Lucky. Eat up Sidney Silverman. Last july the president of the Manitoba landlords association promised that landlords would be reasonable when controls were lifted. All most landlords want is 10 to 15 per cent he said at the time. With Manitoba s rent decontrol program Only one week old it looks like the gouging of pre rent control Days is right Back with us. Not 10 or 15 per cent Sidney. The increases Are averaging 19 per cent in some smaller apartment blocks and As High As 30 per cent in some single family Homes or duplexes Accord ing to the rent review Agency. Now Silverman is eating Crow and he does t much like it. In a statement thursday Silver Man was squirming All Over the place. First he said he was not aware of any increases of that magnitude. Then he implied that either the rent review Agency or the free press did t know what they were talking about there is a possibility that the figures Are exaggerate next he tried to get out of it by pointing out not All landlords in the province Are members of his association the inference being that perhaps the gouges Are non Mem Bers. He wound up with this com ment the figures in the free press refer to Only a few Hundred units and not the general increase. I believe that within the next few weeks the picture will be entirely different and the general increases will be Between eight per cent and 15 per cent and not 19 per cent to 30 per cent.
