Prices at the pumps Dur ing november were As Low As about 77 cents a gallon but earlier this week Impe rial Oil changed the prices upwards to about 88 cents. The situation is almost As volatile As the product. Bowles said he was get Ting almost hourly reports on current prices around the City Timur Day morn ing and nobody was ready to. Gasoline was being sold All Over the City for less than retail Cost so companies had to so import dealers and lower prices in order to maintain their position in the marketplace. Gasoline should be sell ing at about 93 cents a gallon Bowles said but the prices will continue to be less than wholesale until bankruptcy or sanity returns. Redfern said a Price Dif Ference of one cent Between two dealers located near each other would mean the lower priced dealer could have 10 cars waiting in line and the higher priced Sta Tion would be without customers. Imperial Oil has taken the step this time to try and reduce support to their dealers but Redfern repeatedly said they would t for your Dier and fur Exchange 18o Princess pm. 943-7788 Exchange your hides for mitts or gloves m. Oil companies Don t control the marketplace about 25 per cent of the business is in the hands of private Redfern said. Their aggressive pric ing has been a major Force in the drop of pump prices. Some Are still trying to build volume and Hope they can depend on con Sumer loyalty to hold vol ume when prices Rise again Redfern said. Bowles agreed the Down Ward trend has been influenced by Small name brands but major Oil companies have also contributed to bringing the Cost to below wholesale. If a Small name Brand wants the difference to be two cents a gallon and a major company wants the difference to be one cent a gallon and each try 10 implement their marketing philosophies there is a Price War said Bowles. But Only the major companies can bring prices Back into a reasonable prof it line because the smaller brands can t afford to Start raising prices first he said. Bowles did not feel that the Small name brands were always the instigators of Price wars. Sometimes the majors Are wiping each other out so fast we Are left sitting on the a Price of about 93.9 cents cents a gallon would Start to end the he said.
