It s an honest witty account of two happily marrieds who happen to enjoy one another s company Over 26 weekends of their lives. The film opens in 1951 at a California resort. In Stead they climb into bed and the pattern is set. In every respect but the Law they Are a typical Cou ple sharing their dreams traumas and aspirations. The movie does not drag us Back year by year to examine the relationship. The title cards merely note that five or six years have passed. Furthermore through a montage of news stories and fads we can piece together How Doris and George s lives have been changed Over that period. In 1951 George is a clean Cut Type and Doris a rather sheltered House Frau in 1956 Doris has started to improve her mind in 1961 she s about to graduate from night school. It s these initial passages which work test in the film. The rapport despite the couple s awkwardness about their sinful state is most satisfying. They Dis cuss their families and the Virtues and faults of their mates with Candor and honesty. The relationship shows distinct signs of growth. The latter years Lack the zest of the earlier ones. In 1966 Doris turns hippy and George has become a Hawk about Vietnam in 1972 George has become involved in conscious raising. The trends and manners of the times dominate these sections at the expense of the people. In part these problems Are due to rather Ina Fec Tive attempts at aging the couple through makeup. Both Alda and Burstyn appear Overly aware that they Are playing at being old and it zaps All the bite from their dialogue. But this superficial Hin Drance hides a much greater fault. Can it be that George and Doris annual tryst is becoming Boring i think sadly yes. What began As an exciting unpredictable Romance turns into an almost prearranged routine. Year after year Doris lets the air out of George s tires. Undaunted George comeback is of maybe i did t think things it s a Good Indi cation of the Lack of punchy comedy dialogue. On screen same time next year scores Best at the relationship s serious Side. There is tremendous warmth when Doris con fides her affection for Helen George s unseen wife. George shines when he helps Doris Cope with her Rocky marriage. It s an Odd distinction for a comedy. As George Alda provides a credible if unexciting canadians motor hotel 1400 notre Dame ave. There is something too inti mate about his style. Alda s limitations Are compounded by Burstyn s dynamic spot on interpretation of Doris. She s plays him under a carpet. Rarely is she less than exceptional. Her Doris is totally believable and sympathetic. The film makers have done very Little to open up the stage version. The few at tempts made at this Are somewhat awkward particularly the bridging Mon tages which Are both intrusive and distracting. The picture is neither classic nor travesty. It s easy to remain indifferent about its strengths and weakness. This past week saw the death of one of the few people one could Call a film artist Jean Renoir. Per haps Renoir son of French artist Auguste Renoir came naturally by his gifts. Regardless. I doubt any film maker can match Renoir for his consistent por trayal of the dignity of Man and his dogged Faith in the spirit and humanity of All people. Renoir s Best known films were la Grande illusion and la Regie do Jeu rules of the game made in 1937 and 1939. La Grande illusion dealt with a group of French prisoners of War in 1918. His portrait of this isolated world represented a much larger Community and this recurrent device served him Well in years to come. Renoir once commented that when he made la Grande illusion he put All his contempt for the tragedy of War on celluloid. It was a tremendous Success both critically and com he noted. However two years later the nazis marched into Renoir was the finest of rare wines and i mourn the drinking of the last drop of his Vintage.
