Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 13, 1981, Winnipeg, Manitoba Joe Louis dead at 66 Las vegas Nev. A former heavyweight boxing Champion Joseph Louis Barrow 66, who held the title for 12 years and ranked As one of history s greatest fighters died yesterday at his Home of cardiac he won the hearts of Louis s wife Martha and some immediate family members were with him when he died. Called the Brown bomber for his punch and string of knockout victories Louis was 23 when he won the title by knocking out 31-year-old James Braddock in the eighth round at Chicago in 1937. He had a 35-to-l record including 31 knockouts at the time he first won the heavyweight title. In 17 years As a Boxer he earned about million but had Little to show for it when he was through. He was a Host for Caesar s place in Las vegas at the time of his death. Dues proposal would unionize ads by Joe Rubin the Manitoba medical association is proposing to collect dues from All doctors in the province a move which in effect would turn the voluntary association into a Union. The proposal is contained in a series of six resolutions aimed at strengthening the association s collective bargaining position with the provincial government. Mma members Are expected to de Bate and vote on the resolutions at their annual meeting May 9. In a newsletter to the association s membership the Mma s executive committee says it is proposing the resolutions because it is dissatisfied with the history of collective beg Ging under medicare and the ineffective negotiations which have resulted in severe manpower Short Ages in Many specialities creating a serious decline in the availability of medical care the association s membership will be asked to direct the executive com Mittee to have All doctors in Manitoba recognized under specific Legisla Tion As employees in name Only to facilitate although the Mma is currently the profession s Only bargaining a gent ind negotiates with the Manitoba health services commission the resolutions ask the membership 10 authorize the association s executive to work toward enshrining that position in legislation. As Well the membership will vote on whether to direct the Mma to press the government to enact legis lation providing for binding arbitration in negotiation disputes. The use of binding arbitration to Settle bargaining stalemate was re commended by former supreme court Justice Emmett Hall in his medicare review last year. While most provincial medical associations have rejected binding arbitration the Mma has said it favors the idea. But the Pivotal Resolution Calls for All doctors to contribute to the Cost of negotiations by having the Misc de duct from their fees an amount equivalent to an Mma member ship a year to be forwarded to the association. About 1.300 of the doctors in the province belong to the Mma. Some non members Are not practice ing physicians but have academic or government positions.
