I i r3 High school is a family affair for daughters adults in Day classes one solution to lower enrolments by Penni Mitchell Lynne Stratton is one of 600 students at Gle Lawn collegiate. No one gets after her to do her Homework. No one has to. Stratton 34, attends school because it s something she has wanted to do for a Long time. While she initially had some misgivings Stratton believes she is now fitting into student life the kids Are great they treat me like i m one of she says adding i Don t want any special privileges. I m treated the same As after being out of High school for 15 years Stratton says returning was frightening. Before she mustered some self Confidence she worried about fail ing. In order to meet University require ments Stratton is taking English his tory and biology. A single Parent Stratton also has two daughters attending Gle Lawn Don Alyn in Grade 11 and Gaylene in Grade 10 Stratton says she enjoys going to school with them. Although they Don t attend any classes together they often run into each other in the Halls and once in awhile they meet for lunch. Over All she says things have worked out pretty Well. Stratton works full time so she often does t crack the books until late at night but the extra Load has t dampened her spirits. They want to go during the Gle Lawn plans a program for sep tember to encourage people like Strat Young parishioners hold 30-hour fast to combat hunger thirty four Young parishioners at holy ghost Church spent 30 hours fast ing during the weekend in a bid to help combat world hunger. Gloria Desorcy a part time University of Winnipeg student and one of the fast organizers said participants were asked to donate what they would have spent on food and entertainment during the fast period 9 . Pat Multan a Jefferson Junior High student who raised said the contributions Are much better than Mara Thon Type pledge sponsors. With sponsoring it seems if you Don t make it you re failing. I did it because i wanted to not because some body sponsored Vic Janus a Grade 8 student at Ken Seaford Junior High said he raised and i got a Good feeling that i did something Good the fast concluded with a mass Fol Lowed by a Light lunch rather than a feast which could be bad for the health. Yule break May be longer Public school students and teach ers throughout greater Winnipeg May enjoy a full two week vacation at Christmas. School division spokesmen contacted saturday said students and teachers in St Assiniboine South St. Boniface fort Garry St. Vital River East seven Oaks and Transcona Springfield school divisions will Likely receive the full two week Holiday. The extra two Days will be made up during the school year. Ron Banister president of the Winni Peg teachers association which rep resents Winnipeg division no. I teach ers said the division has surveyed parents on their preference and re sults Are expected shortly. Division teachers voted overwhelmingly last year to have the extra time at Christmas he said. Grant Park High school facing a similar decrease in enrolment is seek ing the go ahead for a program to encourage area residents to attend Day classes principal Irwin Sera said. Grade 11 students at Grant Park recently conducted a Survey to see if residents were interested in taking courses at the school. Of the 220 interviewed 65 per cent said they would be interested. The Grant Park proposal already has reached the school Board level. Goals differ because of differing situations Peter Prystupa of the River East school division says continuing education has to be approached on the adult s terms. They want to be treated As i Dividu adults goals Are different too. While some May want to take a few Craft courses or focus on one particular subject others want full course loads and a diploma when they re finished. Many go Back according to Prystupa to upgrade themselves for their Job or because they May be in danger of losing their Job and Are seeking train ing in another Field. Still others he says May go because they feel their children May be looking Down on them while others attend for the sheer enjoyment. Rex Williams superintendent of the Morris Macdonald school division has launched an advertising Campaign encouraging adults to take High school courses. The problem of getting adults into the classes says Williams is people. It s a question of overcoming the disinclination for he says. Integrating adults into regular Day programs answers the problem of de Clining enrolment and helps improve the classroom climate Williams says. Most students look on schools As a place they Are compelled to lie explains and if they see others coming on their own it helps improve their own attitude toward school.
