Since then fishermen have been unable to find the top Grade fish in their traditional areas and have had to Complete their catch at the Northeast end of the Lake which produces a Large Quantity of second class Whitefish. Mckay said Hydro will compensate the loss in Quality with a Price differential which give fishermen top Price regard less of Grade. The offer would be confined to Whitefish caught in the traditional area. However if the fishermen and Hydro officials monitoring the Lake found the catch was falling off in the area the Price subsidy would be extended to non traditional areas he said. During the next year. Hydro has also offered to pay a 11 subsidy on All fish caught in the tradition Al area to make up for the extra Effort required. Last year a 22 Cems a Pound subsidy was paid in the traditional area but Only for Tup Grade Iii tet ish. According to Hydro calculations the amount of time and Effort required by the fishermen has More than doubled since the diversion came into effect. Association president William Dysart objected to the offer because there is really nothing much different from last year. In reality you Are just compensating us to Mick to the traditional he ruled that when the fishermen moved to the non traditional area especially at the North end they were working longer travelling greater distances and incurring greater expenses. Yet the 22.5-Cems-per-Pound subsidy does t do us a Damn bit of Good in the place we need it he said. Fishermen have to work 18 hours a Day on straight pay i Hout a cent of overtime he added. Mckay said the emphasis was put on the traditional areas because there is still a Good possibility that the top Quality fish Are still there. He said no one has been Able to explain the disappearance of the fish and part of Hydro s compensation package is to continue systematic monitoring of the Lake. Mckay said Hydro s total compensation package for the next year amounts to about he stressed that according to figures supplied by Federal agencies the Hydro package is More than the fishermen have Ever earned from the Lake in a year before or after the hooding. He said that in tote Long run the fishery will have to become economically viable to survive. Dysart the fishermen were not after More Money but different distribution. He proposed Hydro subsidize fish Ermen with smaller boats and fewer nets to operate on Inland lakes in the area and possibly on Northern Indian Lake. He suggested the main Lake be left to fishermen with larger boats and More nets. This would streamline the operation and give most fishermen a Chance to make a living he said. The directors will present Hydro s offer for approval. William m. Young Ltd. William m. Young Lomei area manager for Henry Birks sons Ltd. In the process of organizing his own company. I.
