Coun. Abe Yanofsky demanded that Norrie in Ontario this week on Busi Ness provide an explanation to Council on Why he participated in the celebrations for Croatia recognized As a state during the second world War by nazi Germany and fascist Italy. I think All members of Council Are entitled to know Why he did what he did and Why he ignored the advice that was sunny today 22 Cloudy tonight 2 Ull provided to him in Yanofsky said. Croatia was founded april 10, 1941, and recognized four Days later by Ger Many and Italy. It fell in 1945 under attack from Josep Tito s partisans and was incorporated into the current state of Yugoslavia. According to the encyclopedia Britannica the croatian state persecuted and killed Many thousands of orthodox serbs jews and muslims. Free press columnist Paul Sullivan informed Norrie of Croatia s history on april 8, but Norrie said he was already committed to the Celebration that there May be another interpretation of the Independent state of Croatia that the local croatian Community has a Pavilion at Fol Lorama and that Yugo Slavia is an artificial state anyway. Coun. Joe Zuken was the first last night to raise objections to Nome s participation in the event which included flying the former state s Flag in the City Hall Plaza and a banquet at the croatian Church on North main Street. By a strange the victims of the nazi holocaust will be commemorated sunday the 38th anniversary of the uprising of the jewish ghetto in Warsaw against the nazis in 1943, Zuken said. He took exception to the mayor s remarks reported in the Sullivan column. I think it is insulting to a country Yugoslavia with which Canada has diplomatic relations and an embassy in he said. I think it is insulting to the survivors of the Zuken said before any group is Hon ored by displaying a Flag in the City Plaza a civic Honor it should be care fully checked so that we have no repetition of such a Dishonour to the in an interview Zuken said nor Rie s attendance at the Celebration see mayor s Page 4 Ter inching Nero habit jazz guitarist Lenny Breau yearns to make music thursday april 16, 1981 vol 109 no tie Sun rises . Poles demand sweeping reforms rank and file communists throw unprecedented Challenge at leaders by the Baltimore Sun to run Poland an unprecedented meeting of rank and file members of the polish communist party has demanded sweeping reforms in the Way the country is governed in effect throwing Down a Challenge to the pol ish party s pro soviet factions. Meeting in this Northern polish City yesterday representatives of various grass roots Reform groups within the party directed withering criticism at the party leadership and called for political changes that would Lead to a level of democratization unheard of in communist Eastern Europe. Create new party this movement among the rank and file is an attempt to create a new party a new Way of leading the one of the meeting organizers told the 500 or so delegates. The fact that the meeting was held in the open and with the knowledge of the party leadership is a sign of How deeply the political life of Poland has been altered perhaps permanently by the pluralism forced by the Independent Trade unions. The criticisms directed at party Lead ers and the demands made for change in Poland s political life in a Public meeting open to both polish and foreign journalists were without precedent anywhere in the soviet bloc seeing As they were made by card carrying party members. Not Only did they demand greater political liberalization and a virtual end to press censorship but the dismissal or ouster of top level party members As Well some of whom Are widely identified As the pro Moscow element of the leadership. The changes demanded will not go Down Well in the soviet Union where As in other orthodox communist sys tems party directives go from the top Down and not from the Bottom up. It is certain to make them an organizer of yesterday s meeting said. Another meeting is planned for May and one for june As part of the run up to the polish communist party Congress scheduled for july. Already the polish leadership has promised reforms in choosing Dele Gates to the Congress that would make the polish party the most democratic in Eastern Europe. Such reforms include a secret ballot and the possibility of contested offices for party elections. This would make it difficult for Many of the pro Moscow factions to retain their posts. One speaker said yesterday that under such a system perhaps Only 10 to 15 per cent of the current party leadership should be retained in office and they should be kept largely to insure continuity. See pole Page 4 from the Canadian press the eight provinces opposing Ulila teral Patria Tion of the Constitution received a Jolt yesterday when a Quebec court ruled that the Federal govern ment s Patria Tion plan is Legal.
