U of m streamlining part time schedules by Manfred Jager a University of Manitoba official says streamlined class schedules could result in increased enrolment by part time students next year. Gordon Thompson the University s director of summer session and credit Extension programs said part time class schedules which used to meander a lot through the week have already been streamlined for this fall to make taking classes easier. We Are thinking of the housewife or the office clerk for example who will find it easier to get away from Home or Job if it s the same Lime of Day mondays and wednesdays or tuesdays and thursdays. Achievement we be achieved this for the fall Thompson said new time tables will be patterned to feature symmetrical 90-Mi Iii Ite periods twice a week or three hour time slots once weekly. Previous timetables necessitated students to come in for 50-minute lec Tures As Many As three times a week at different hours. Thompson said part time City student enrolment has risen every year increasing 10 per cent alone from 1975 to 1979. The University s continuing education Board and the University of Manitoba Stu dents Union will hold a one Day workshop Friday for students people considering courses University professors and administrators to air other problems and Sug Gest solutions. Dubbed obstacles and set to accommodate 300 participants at University Centre the workshop will Deal with problems such As financial Aid Day care for toddlers and transportation difficulties. All possible obstacles to the obstacles workshop have been removed Thompson said. There will be free parking and free babysitting service for participants. Overwhelmingly rejected a company contract offer which featured a wage increase of 28 per cent Over two years. About 230 service and maintenance workers who have been on strike since feb. 2, voted 91 per cent against accepting the latest company contract package said Aniie Makinson president of Energy and chemical workers Union local 681. The Gas company s offer tabled thursday called for a 15-per-oent wage increase during the first year of the contract and 13 per cent for the second. Workers would also have received an extra one per cent salary increase if they agreed to extend the contract one month to feb. 28, 1983. The offer represented a one per cent wage increase per year Over the company s previous proposal. Makinson said the contract was rejected on the basis of the salary offer and the Lack of a Back to work agree ment. The Union originally asked for a 35-per-Cem wage increase but said it would accept 32 per cent.
