Don Starkell 48, and his son Dana 20, left Here june 1 in a 6.5-metre Canoe determined to Complete a metre Canoe trip to the Amazon River. Conquering the Gulf was a com paddling along the Shoreline and overcoming High winds Ocean Bur rents and interruptions by mexican military patrols. We could beat the Gulf then we could go All the Starkell said in a Telephone interview from Isla Cancun Mexico. Healthy elated i both he and his son Are healthy and elated after travelling around the. Northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula into the Caribbean sea. We landed on the Beach in front of one of Cancun s finest hotels Camino real with our Canadian Flag flying on the Bow of our Canoe. The Sand is like White sugar. The sea is every color of Blue imaginable. We be had a rough passage with Many dangerous situations which could have ended our Starkell said. During the trip from Vera Cruz to Cancun rough Waters knocked father and son from their Craft. Near the fishing port of Alvarado we were knocked Over by a 15-foot wave like a Leaf the tide swept us about a mile out to sea. A shrimp boat picked us up and nearly Bent the Canoe in half. We were there for four Days. We did t lose anything really hell for us Starkell said one 200-Kilometre ses Sion from pro gesso to Al Cuyo was really hell for we planned to do the stretch in five Days and it took us 12. We were reduced to paddling at night and came up with 38 Miles. In the next 10 Days we did 90 Miles that s nine Miles a Day. It was Rotten under difficult conditions. One night we did two Miles. It was like an Albatross around our the Starkell have been living off the land and with the help of people along the coast just before reaching Al Cuyo we went ashore to look for coconuts. Dana was up a tree and we were visited by two mexican marines in dark Blue uniforms wondering what we were doing. We have experienced these peo ple before. We told them we knew the Admiral of the Navy i Vera Cruz and had a letter of recommendation. That seem to hold them pretty Good and All they were interested in after that was getting some of our Starkell said. They took four of the Best coconuts and pried them open with their bayonets and left us the ones which were no Good. It was an interesting while the Starkell were paddling around the tip of the Yucatan a huge Black fish approached the Canoe. It was either the biggest shark in the world or a Small whale. It was about 15 feet Long and three or four feet across the . It cruised by five feet away and then was t interested and slammed on Starkell said. Jobin told to take it easy it Goy f. L. Bud Jobin who spent 10 Days in the Hospital suffering kidney infection has returned to work. I i m feeling pretty Good but i be been told to take it Jobin 66, said yesterday. Due to retire at the end of septem ber Jobin said he has a full schedule for next week. After that i m going to heed my doctor s advice and slow his five year tenure was to expire March 31, but the lieutenant governor sought the six month Extension to sept. 30 because he did t want to be kicked out of government House in the Middle of although it is customary to make the appointment a few months in and Vance Jobin said he has received no word on who his replacement would be. He said yesterday he wrote to immigration minister Lloyd a worthy Manitoba s representative in the Federal Cabinet to find out what is we Are still targeting for that Jobin retiring in september sept. 30 Jeff o Brien appointments Secretary for prime min ister Trudeau said yesterday. Winnipeg s Deputy mayor Pearl Mcgonigal whose name is most frequently mentioned As a successor to Jobin has refused to comment on the speculation. Nome s proclamation of Law Day in City first such move in Canada at the request of the Manitoba Branch of the Canadian bar association mayor Bill Nome has proclaimed May 1 As Law Day in Winnipeg. Although Law Day has been a feature of the american bar association for Many years Winnipeg s recognition of the Day will be the first in Canada. Lafle Mordin president of the bar association s Manitoba division and Jim Stoffman the division s Law Day chairman were in Nome s office yesterday for the proclamation and to explain its purpose. Stoffman said the object of the Day is to make people More aware of their rights and obligations under the Law and to let people know lawyers Are approachable. It is hoped to expand Law Day into Law week across Canada in future years he said. Mordin said the Law Day program will concentrate on bringing the More knowledge of the Law into City schools. The school divisions representing the City s 84 schools were contacted to see if they would like a lawyer to address classes in their area on Law Day.
