Winnipeg free press Friday april 24, 1981 9 Evans under attack by Cecil Rosner former nip Cabinet min ister Len Evans was accused yesterday of misleading the Public and being a hypo Crite for opposing the Sale of Crown owned Mckenzie seeds Ltd. After having tried to sell the firm himself 11 years ago. Co operative develop ment minister Bob Banman told the legislature he had discovered documents from 1970 which prove that Evans then Industry and Commerce minister was actively seek ing a buyer for the govern ment owned seed packaging firm. Evans East has been the opposition s most vocal opponent of conservative government plans to sell the Brandon based company and has repeatedly denied in the past that the former nip administration had Ever consid ered privatizing the company. But in a feb. 10, 1970, letter to Deputy Industry and Commerce minister lome Dyke Evans states he had asked a department official to investigate whether any Canadian companies would be interested in taking Over Mckenzie seeds. In the letter Evans stresses the urgency of at tempting to find a buyer be cause there had been an other offer from ferry Morse co. Which was not acceptable to the govern ment. In response to Evans re quest the then director of the food products Branch contacted two companies Canadian linseed oils and Archibald brokerage to see if they were interested in acquiring ownership of the company. The government ultimately decided not to sell the firm. But Banman said Evans deliberately misled the legis lature and Public when he issued a press release last year stating at to time did i As a minister responsible for Mckenzie seeds from 1970-1977, solicit or cause to be solicited a potential buyer for Mckenzie it also said i have always been of the View that Mckenzie seeds should remain in Brandon As a publicly owned in an interview yesterday Evans said he could not re member the letters referred to by Banman. He. Maintained he never actively considered Selling the company. If the letters do exist they May have been the product of an overzealous civil ser vant trying to do his Job Evans said. It s obvious he Banman does t have anything better to do than to go around searching for 10-year-old Evans said. Banman said the letters prove that the nip tried to sell Mckenzie seeds soon after coming to office just As the conservative administration did after 1977. The documents also Are evidence of the hypocrisy of Evans and other nip Mem Bers who themselves Are now trying to use old Docu ments and minutes of meet Ings to attempt to discredit Deputy Premier Don Craik s handling of the Manitoba Hydro Board he said.
