Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 28, 1981, Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada aids salvadorans in safety bid by Michael Doyle Winnipeg free press action by Canadian officials in Ottawa and Mexico has allowed two salvadoran families to Settle with relatives in Montreal and escape their War torn country. Canadian officials said the families were in route to Montreal on easter monday when their bid for safety in Canada was interrupted by an Over zealous customs official in Chicago. The five salvadorans were returned to Mexico City by american officials and were Only hours from being deported to Al Salvador when Canadian offi Cloudy tonight 3 Cloudy tomorrow 15 vials stepped in. The salvadorans now settled in Montreal s St. Leonard District Are Maximliano Sanchez. 43, his daughter Ava Margarita 15, and his son Juan Carlos 16, Yolanda Juarez 37, and her daughter Dora Alicia. Canadian officials say the families were not activists for either Side in the salvadoran conflict the ruling Mili tary Junta backed by the ., or leftists. Canadian officials say the five left Al Salvador during the easter weekend but were stopped by a Customs official at Chicago Airport and ordered to return to their previous Stop Mexico City under detention. Canadian officials said one of the family members telephoned a priest with whom they were associated and and he contacted a Church Agency which then contacted amnesty International.
