William French executive director of the Manitoba Public health directorate said yesterday that 12 Manitoban have been treated with anti rabies vaccine so far in 1981, up from none at this time last year. About one in five people who Are bitten develop rabies while about one in 100 who have an open Cut and come in Contact with Rabid animals get the disease. Rabies Experiment Andrick said the Ontario government is experimenting with an Oral anti rabies vaccine set out in balls of Ham Burger meat for red foxes but it s not yet known if this will be effective. If it s successful i m sure authorities in Manitoba would want to try it out on Andrick said noting that rabies have been endemic in the Skunk population Here for the last 20 so far this year there have been 47 confirmed cases of Rabid animals up from 53 in All of last year and 50 in 1979. Most of the animals were skunks but the disease has also afflicted five cattle one Fox and one cat. When cattle Are involved the Herd is quarantined for up to two months which Means none of the animals can be sent to Slaughter without clearance from the Federal veterinarian. Cattlemen Are paid Market value by the Federal agriculture department for cattle which die from the disease. Or. Andrich expected there will be about 100 confirmed cases of Rabid animals before the year is out double the number in each of the Lasi two years but less than the 112 cases reported in 1977. It s not uncommon to have 100 confirmations of Rabid animals per year he said adding that in one year there were 270 such cases. He said the problem this year in t confined to a few specific locations but is spread throughout Southern Manitoba.
