Up Joseph Landriault 39, the Man who became Canada s first heart transplant patient since 1976, appears to have passed the first hurdle in his struggle to live with the heart of a 19-year-old Man. The drug used successfully at Stan Ford University in California is said to help prevent rejection of the new heart without unduly diminishing the body s defence mechanisms. Landriault has already had a Brief visit from his wife following the four hour operation. A doctor who was a member of the special team of surgeons from univer sity and Victoria hospitals and the claims absurd University of Western Ontario which performed the operation said yester Day the heart began to pump spontaneously As soon As circulation of the blood had been restored. He said there was no suggestion of any technical problems before the heart was removed from the donor it was washed with a Salt solution and then cooled. It was kept in a cooled state until it was transplanted into the recipient about two hours later. The world s first heart transplant operation was performed dec. 3, 1967, by or. Christiaan Barnard in South Africa. There have been 19 heart transplants in Canada since the first one was done at the Montreal heart Institute in May 1968. The last heart transplant was perfumed in 1976 at St. Michael s Hospital in Toronto. To producer prices also Are set by the boards. The two researchers said the boards Are limiting production and keeping prices up to increase Farmer incomes. They said manufactured milk prices in Canada Are roughly double the world Market prices.
