Dust bowl needs More rain Regina up scattered showers in Southern Saskatchewan yesterday were Only a temporary respite from this year s dust bowl weather conditions says agriculture department spokesman Henry Zilm. I Don t think we be had enough moisture that would prevent soil from Drifting it s Only temporary in a Zilm chief statistician for the Saskatchewan department of agriculture said in an interview yesterday. We be had some showers and we be had some fairly severe soil Drifting since then so we re far from out of the Woods on this Zilm and Al Beattie Public relations director of the Alberta wheat Pool said continued dry weather will cause severe problems. Beattie said there is a potential for problems with dry conditions across Western Canada this year. The ground was left Bare and dry Early As a result of a mild Winter. On saturday northwesterly winds drifted layers of topsoil into the Regina area piling the Earth up in ditches where residents arrived yesterday in trucks to collect it for their gardens. Farmers in some Northern parts of the province say although conditions Are drier than usual there appears to he less danger of severe dust storms than in the South. Farmers throughout the province Are continuing to Plant their crops. Some areas of the West experienced drought conditions last year and the provincial and Federal governments were forced to put drought Relief pro Grams in place. Colin Thatcher a progressive conservative member of the provincial legislature who operates both a Grain farm and a cattle ranch near Moose jaw said the water table this Spring is the lowest it s been in his lifetime.
