Alec Boyes chairman of the education department s curriculum policy review Council said yesterday Edu cation minister Keith Cosens approved the program at a recent meeting with Council representatives. He said the minister has not decided whether to accept a Council recommendation to offer the course in grades 5 to 9. Murray Smith a St. John s High school counsellor drafted a framework for a lifestyles course after the coun cil approved it last year. Cosens has approved that the program be implemented this fall Only in High schools. Plans changed initially the course was to be implemented As an option in september but in a feb. 28 memo Cosens said discussions with the women s Institute confirmed that it should be taught to students in grades 7 to 9 and possibly Grade 10 and integrated into regular courses rather than operating separately. Boyes assistant superintendent of St. Vital school division said Cosens told Council members last month that if the program is so Good it should be started in Junior High schools with the optional course in High school As a Boyes said Council members suggested it Start in Grade 5, but Cosens said he wanted to think that Over. An answer is expected from Cosens when the coun cil meets later this month Boyes said. He said he is not sure if guidelines will be ready for i he entire High school course next september but students in an estimated 15 to 20 Pilot High schools will have a Chance to take whatever portion is ready.
