Wednesday june wandering inmates terms boosted Manitoba court of Appeal has in creased the sentences of two men who failed to return to jail after being allowed out to attend a Church service saying the offence is a threat to the integrity of the custodial system. In a unanimous decision released in writing yesterday the three member Appeal court ruled that inmates who breach the Trust imposed on them when they Are released for a Short stated period must be adequately Joseph Oliver Chartrand 20, of mini Tonas had been sentenced to seven Days in jail when he appeared before a provincial court judge in Dauphin. His sentence was increased to two months on top of the jail Terra he was serving. The two month sentence of Anthony Mark Cawagas 18, of Valley River Indian Reserve who pleaded guilty to wilful damage of property As Well As being unlawfully at Large was doubled to four months in jail also consecutive to the sentence he was serving. The offences occurred last january. In delivering the court s judgment chief Justice Samuel Freedman noted the judges were told seven Day sentences Are not unusual in the Dauphin area.
