Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 3, 1981, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday june pages 65-80 Speier s Lively Bat proves Puzzle to Lou Kennedy runs into controversy on Way to Check ered sports offence name of bombers riders game free press photo by Larry Tucker Winnipeg Blue bombers would like to score More than a few touchdowns this evening when they meet Saskatchewan roughriders at Winnipeg stadium. The bombers need a big Victory even in this mean nothing Canadian football league pre season Outing. They re out to discover what they have in the Way of football players. They re also out to sell tickets for future Home games. The roughriders would like to score a touchdown tonight. Just so they know they can do it. Last weekend the roughriders held a scrimmage at Taylor Field. They ran 85 plays and Only one touchdown was scored. But it was called Back on a holding infraction. They Aren t merely rebuilding in Saskatchewan. They be gone right Back to the drawing Board. Green giants not so Jolly the roughriders Haven t exactly been the terrors of the Cal in recent seasons. The once Jolly Green giants have had Little to chuckle about having an accumulative record of 8-39-1 from the past four seasons. In 1979, and again in 1980, the riders were a 2-14 Ball club. That dismal record Cost a Cal leg end Ron Lancaster his Job As head coach of th3 Saskatchewan entry. It prompted the hiring of former Blue bomber and Edmonton Eskimo Assis Tant coach Joe Faragalli As Lancaster s replacement. It has resulted in a major Reno vation project. And right now nobody knows if the Structure will stand up to the Wear of a Cal season. Faragalli is bringing 45 players to Winnipeg for this exhibition game. After a training Camp which has been almost As hard hitting As a game of Ping Pong in the family rec room he still in t quite sure what he has to put on the Field come the regular season. The roughriders will make a vast number of lineup changes prior to the commencement of the regular season. Right now it would appear the majority of those alterations will take place on defence. Saskatchewan intends to go with a three four alignment As its bread and butter defence this year. Tonight Faragalli Hopes to find out what he has in the Way of line backing Talent to fill that Bill. In his Hunt for four starting line backers Faragalli recruited almost everyone who could Wear a helmet and Chew tobacco at the same time. Nine of the riders travelling contingent Are linebackers including people like Harry Walters and Tom Schulz both former Blue bombers. Among the Many Roughrider prospects to watch this evening once they be had their 8 . Kickoff is Rookie linebacker Rick Donaldson. Then there is inside lineman Jamie Giles. Giles was supposed to work All sorts of wonders for the roughriders this season. But he showed up at training Camp 20 pounds overweight and has hardly lived up to expectations. If there is one Bright Light in the Roughrider Camp it is receiver Chris Defrance a speedster gifted with a Berry great set of hands. A year ago in the Chicago bears National football league Camp Defrance beat out a kid named Emmanuel Tolbert who came North to be one of the few threats in the roughriders 1980 offence. Meanwhile head coach Ray Jauch has a few things to find out about his Blue bombers. Number one on Jauch s list is his offensive line. Without question the key to any Winnipeg Success this sea son will be the Protection of Dieter Brock. With the right Side of the Offen Sive line gone thanks to the retirements of Larry Butler and Butch Norman Jauch and the bombers Are left with an enormous question Mark. Another Large Winnipeg priority is an improved pass Rush. To that end Jauch moved defensive end Ecomet Burley inside to defensive tackle handing Burley s outside spot to highly touted newcomer Pete Catan. The bombers Hope to find room for an extra import on their defence this season. Jauch does not know at this stage if the bombers would Benefit More by placing that additional Ameri can player on the defensive line or in the defensive Backfield. That in essence is what the pre season round of four games is All about. The end zone the roughriders brought Only two quarterbacks Joe Barnes and John Hufnagel to Winni Peg. The riders also plan to give Joey Walters a shot at the Slomback position tonight which was to be expected. Ever since he came into the Canadian league Joe Faragalli has been designing offensive systems with two Quick receivers at the inside spots. To that end Veteran Saskatchewan receiver Steve Mazurak could be in trouble. Mazurak did not make the trip. Jauch says Jimmy Edwards will be Winnipeg s starting halfback this evening. Jauch also said Quarter Back Dieter Brock thrives on plenty of work and will get his share of the work at least tonight. The bombers Are Likely to have at least 55 players in uniform this evening which could Cre ate Large problems for any people who fail to Purchase a program. Mixed emotions there Are a variety of emotions shown at a track and Field meet. These two athletes competing in yesterdays Monan collegiate athletic conference meet show that compassion is a give and original six fail to earn spots on nil s 80-81 All Star team Montreal up a record equalling eight teams Are represented on the 1980-81 All Star teams announced today by the National hockey league and for the first time in league history no pre-1967 franchise is represented on the first team. Only twice before have eight teams been represented among the 12 players selected to the two teams. The first was in 1935-36 when the nil comprised eight teams including Montreal maroons and new York americans. The other was in 1974-75 when the league had 18 teams. Carlyle s selection Marks the first time a Pittsburgh player has been chosen to either the first or second team in the club s 14-year history. The Kings triple Crown line of Dionne simmer Taylor is the first line to be named to the two teams since 1978-79 when the islanders line of Bossy Clark Gillies and Bryan Trottier was selected. It is the second time St. Louis has had a first team member and in both in stances a goaltender was named. Glenn Hall was voted to the first team in 1968-69. For the first time in seven seasons the canadians Are not represented on the first team. In the 51-year history of All Star team selections Montreal has had 77 of a selections. Bossy who led the league with 68 goals during the regular season is a first team member for the first time ending a six year reign by Montreal right Winger Guy Lafleur. Joining Carlyle As a first time All Star Are list Lessard and Taylor. Each player named to the first team receives while the second team members each collect list top Point getter Martin s Appeal stalls suspension Chicago a the Case involving Billy Martin temperamental Man Ager of Oakland a a could remain in limbo for quite some time following Martin s Appeal of a seven game sus pension and Fine of by american league president Lee Macphail. Martin had a run in with Umpire Terry Cooney in Toronto last Friday night and was set Down shortly after Ward by Macphail who after review ing films of the incident monday announced the length of the suspension and the amount of the Fine. Martin s lawyer de Sapir filed the Appeal yesterday thereby enabling Martin to return to the Oakland Bench in time for an important three game series that started last night against Chicago White sox. Martin said he did t expect immedi ate action in the Case because we re both on different i m sure it will take a Bob Fishel assistant to Macphail said in new York a hearing Date will be set but it will not be in near future because Macphail is involved in the free agent compensation Issue. Greats think alike by Reyn Davis they were somewhere on a Golf course in Toronto the other Day when Dale Hawer Chuk told Wayne Creaky How excited he was about becoming a member of Winnipeg jets. Call it coincidence or Good business sense but Gretzky and Hawer Chuk have become the stablemates of Toron to accountant Gus Badali a Man who chooses his clients carefully. One week from today barring unforeseen developments the jets will select 18-year-old Hawer Chuk As the first Over All Choice at the National hockey league s 1981 entry draft. The Chance of us trading our Choice is very very said general manager John Ferguson giving the Media an insight into the jets plans during a press conference yesterday. This is a rare Opportunity and we re not going to pass it last week Ferguson had five offers to make a Deal for Hawer Chuk. All of them were turned Down. This week he s had none. Yet he intends to leave his lines open. Even until the last minute be fore the draft begins wednesday morn ing on the floor of the Montreal forum. Increase jets payroll this week Ferguson intends to meet Badali to begin negotiations on a con tract that should add a few digits to the jets payroll. Ferguson believes the Money will be Well spent. I look at him to be a superstar within two he said. The jets feel they know Hawer Chuk inside out. Their Eastern scout Tom Savage has seen him play 45 times this season. We have followed every move of his on and off the said Ferguson. He s led by Hawer Chuk who had 81 goals and 102 assists in 72 games Cornwall royals won Back to Back memorial cups. Comparisons to Gretzky have been rampant raising dangerously High expectations of Hawer Chuk who seems unaffected by such esteemed company. His mannerisms Are about identical to said Ferguson. And he s very smart. Being selected no. 1 won t phase Gretzky has seen Hawer Chuk play and he s impressed. So is Badali. As with All special hockey players Dale appears to have the anticipation and intensity of said Badali. The puck seems to follow him. But he s an individual in his own said to be two or three moves ahead of everyone else Hawer Chuk is admired by Gretzky. I can see what he s doing out there because i think a lot like said Gretzky. He tries to out think play ers. Just like me. That s How hell earn his the draft will last for 10 rounds and the jets will have the first Choice in every round. Ferguson May be inclined to Trade his second round Choice if someone offers him an experienced goaltender in return. I seriously doubt More than five or six players taken inthe first round will play in the nil next said Ferguson. He offered a detailed list of 30 play ers All potential first round choices All graded highly by Central scouting the nil s 10-Man scouting system. However the list did not include the names of two swedes who the jets feel could play right away. If one or both is still available when the first round is completed Ferguson indicated he would take one with his second Choice. I m not optimistic that a second round pick can make the nil right away unless he s a said Ferguson. Bench bits Pittsburgh penguins have expressed an interest in signing free agent goaltender Michel Dion but he has already agreed to terms on a new contract with the jets. Bobby Guindon will be interviewed regarding the position of assistant coach to Tom Watt but it s expected that Guindon will be Back in Tulsa As coach of the oilers. Two Winnipeg products de Fence Man Jim Patrick of Prince Albert raiders and right Winger Geoff Wil son Are rated in the top 30. John Ferguson says he would Patrick if he were still available after the first round. Which is unlikely. Ferguson predicts Boston High school Star Rob Carpenter won t go by the whalers have the fourth Choice. Word from Czecho Slovakia is that Ivan Hlinka is planning to turn pro. Detroit red wings have lost Bohuslav Ebermann to a team in Switzerland ;
