C8 Winnipeg free press wednesday june 3, 1981 80 King passes a cutest Dave free press Allan Besson y they had to run for the Rule Book Jast night As the Winnipeg Speedway opened its doors for another season of Stock car racing. The controversy arose when Linus Mack of East grand Forks Minn., passed Winnipeg Veteran and last year s Champion Lou Kennedy on the final turn of the last Lap heading for a Check ered Flag and first place Money of the problem however was that Mack s Nephew Todd had blown an engine at the top of the turn spraying Oil All Over the track forcing flagman Pat Mooney to bring out the yellow caution Flag. There is Only one said Ken who had slowed Down when he encountered difficulty upon hitting Todd Mack s Oil Slick. You can t win a race on a yellow Flag. And when a yellow Flag comes out you go Back to the previous Lap and i was in front then. Also when the yellow Flag came out after the White Flag that ended the at first it was thought that Mack would receive the Victory. The White Flag is Only to show that the final Lap is in said track owner Pete Verna us. Linus crossed the line however Kennedy said he checked with Verna us prior to leaving the Speedway and things were straightened put. I have the Cheque for first place right he said from his Home. There was never a controversy among the Drivers who were during the heats Mack ran away with the show beating Kennedy and Gard Lamb of Fargo ., by half a Lap however a change of gears and tires made All the difference in the world for Jones running at top of class Len Carlson Bottom slides out of the no. 4 turn. Leo feel us 71 and Bill Barbour follow. Kennedy who although pressed by Mack never looked Back in the Fea Ture. Mitch Johnson of Fargo was the Winner of the late Model feature Fol Lowed by Tom Corcoran of grand Forks ., and last year s top Cana Dian Rick Schwark. Vern Jordan won the super Stock feature ahead of Leo feel us and lome Stoddart while in the fun class for Merly Hobby Dave Saunders finished first with Ray Holden second and Rick Sabesky third. Pit news this was the third Fea Ture win for Lou Kennedy in the past couple of weeks. Kennedy has also won in Glyndon and grand Forks This season. Pete Verna us has taken up to four feet off the top of the Corners improving safety at the track. Ticket prices went up this season from to but Verna us says there was t one from the estimated spectators in attendance. Linus Mack is driving a new car built by his Friend in Minnesota. The 388-cubic Inch Chevy powered machine has been Bro Ken in Well though. Mack began Early this season racing in Florida during february Texas and Oklahoma during March and in Knoxville Iowa Spruit capital of North America in april. Next tuesday is the Mike Swangler memorial race for late models. Sprints won t be competing that night. Hot laps begin at 7 . With racing at 8. By Jeff Blair thanks to the urging of a physical education teacher at Thompson s . Parker collegiate three years ago Rick Jones finds himself perched on the Edge of a potentially outstanding track career. Shrugging off the effects of a strained hamstring Jones sped to Victory i the senior boys 100 and 200-metre races yesterday at the Kuonan collegiate athletic conference track and Field meet at University stadium. Both times were meet records. And his time of seconds in the 100 metres unofficially at least also ties the six year old Canadian inter High record. Jones could find himself in illustrious company. One of the record holders is current National team member Desai Williams. This is not bad for a runner who quit competing for a time five years ago be cause he kept getting blown i gave up running for three he said after his 200-metre performance. Then one Day my phys de teacher came up and said i should try running at our zone he competed for . Parker at that school s zone meet and enjoyed reasonable Success. Later that year he set three Junior Marks at the provincial b meet from there his performances took off. His track prowess spurred a move from Thompson to Winnipeg he has exploded on the local scene this year. I m very surprised at the times i be turned he said shaking his head. I still really Don t feel that Jones will have his Chance to set records next weekend at the provincial a meet. Unlike some of his fellow provincial athletes he has passed up an Opportunity to attend a More prestigious inter provincial meet in Saska Toon. It s not so much because i have a Chance at a record that i m he explained. It s just that with this sore hamstring i d rather run in a smaller his primary goal however is the Junior National team trials in Newfoundland july 26. Jones performance was just one Rea son Garden City captured the senior boys team Crown with 116 Points. Miles Macdonnell finished second with 82, while River East had 58 and Xii Donan East 41. Garden City also captured the Junior boys title by three Points Over Maples collegiate and 15 Over Kildonan East. The senior girls Crown went to River East with 107 Points Well ahead of second place Garden City which finished with 61. River East also captured the Junior girls. Seven other conference records fell. In the men s open event Winnipeg s Sherman Greenfeld lost on a tie breaker in the final bowing to Joe Sacco of Omaha neb., in women s open doubles play for Carde and Scharf reached the final before bowing 21-12, 21-17 to Barb Tennison and Peggy Clark of Minneapolis. Hospitality rules Hamilton event the trip to Hamilton and the Canadian five pin Bowling championships As far As i m concerned was a Good one for the hospitality congeniality and excellent bowl ing. It was More sociable than other affairs i be encountered. Of course i was pleased with the Way Manitoba s classic bowlers came through to win two Gold medals and i know How pleased coaches Max Braitberg and Bernie Lanigan were. Head Manitoba coach Bob King was also pleased to see his open mixed team come through in the final Block to net a Silver medal edging British Columbia and South Ern Ontario in a close race. Manitoba s men s open team had an Excel Lent Opportunity to gain a medal when it began the last Day s Block but it was t to be. Headpins were the main cause of its prob lems and in a few cases pressure made some of the Fellows miss the Headpins plus a few Corner pins especially in the final three games. In fact in one game a strike made the difference of four Points and a win which could have changed the entire picture. Arriving on tuesday our contingent of directors and executive were treated to a visit to the press club. Later the group was taken to the Hamilton Golf and country club As guests of Sherwood lanes proprietor John Alpaugh. The affair was very impressive. In All it was a pleasant Welcome and everyone came away Happy. The awards dinner was Superb and the medallists were Given the Royal treatment. Credit must be Given to the Canadian five pin bowlers association for its work along with the sponsor George Fuller. All bases covered National tournament chairman Winni Peg s Norm Adelberg did a splendid Job of looking after the Winnipeg Crew. President de Lynch was his usual capable self while vice president Jack Hales of London ont., worked hard to make sure All bases of hospitality were covered along with program coordinator Al Hong of Calgary. Lesia Adelberg and Bette Landkamer made sure All the vips were looked after and Gerald Sidloski Manitoba president looked after our provincial group very conscientiously. Association Secretary Ray Landkamer also made sure everything ran smoothly particularly in the hospitality department. It would be impossible to describe All the Good Bowling that took place but one Bowler apart from the excellent Bowling by some of the winners was Joe o Brien of the it strikes me Hart Newfoundland men s open team who registered the top single of 399. Alberta had the Best singles combination of All the provinces in Dianne Morrical and Darrell Lagler. Lagler won the Gold medal and Morrical was two pins away from a Gold in the women s division. Their performances paved the Way for Alberta to win the aggregate Banner. It was Good to see two new entries in the National event Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia sent two bowlers each for the singles event. Bodes Well for future Gerard arbing of , made the fifth spot on the Stepladder finals in his first appearance on the National scene and this bodes Well for the future. Quebec sent a full contingent and had a Winner in the women s singles Christine Danis. The enthusiasm of the teams makes one think the quebecois will be More danger Ous As time goes on. Provincially Quebec has not been notable for its five pin activity As much As its 10-pin ners but mis can change in the future if what i saw was any indication. Northwest territories gave notice it will definitely be a threat in the future now that Bud Knight formerly of Shilo is competing there. The Hamilton appearance was the . Largest representation to Date with 23 bowlers and four coaches. Credit must be Given to the Fine performances by the Northern Ontario group. Association vice president Frank Mas Saro was one of the bowlers. Last year Massaro was a coach and at the time he expressed a wish to be Bowling. Many coaches share the same thought. This year Massaro exclaimed i should have stayed a despite his Bowling there was no doubt of his Pride in the teams. I had a Chat with Dryden Star Ron Stansfield. Stansfield netted a Bronze in the singles. I also met his dad Claude and the Pride in his son was very evident. This column Marks the end of the season for me but there will be stories upcoming on the National five pin finals of the master bowlers to be held in Ottawa later this month. Time for strike racing at Assiniboia Downs Are dissatisfied with the purse Money but Aren t prepared to withhold entries not just yet. A motion to withhold entries effective july 3 was soundly beaten last night by the membership following a lengthy debate Over the Lack of Progress in negotiations with provincial government officials for a larger share of takeout. Only six members four of them from the Peoples Sta ble supported the motion. David Miles a member of the negotiating committee told the meeting it was his opinion that the horsemen would t get anywhere with the government without confrontation. Lew Miles said the government has t Given us anything. Just a Bone. But we should t go on strike now. It s the wrong time. We should take action in the win Ter before the out of town horsemen g. Campbell Maclean president of the hupa opposed the motion and stressed the executive s Suc Cess in getting additional Money during the past few years. He said the govern ment was sympathetic to the horsemen and urged them to continue negotiating. Radial the Sale Ventura i Whitewall radials tir6 size replaces Reg.
