The company is committed to expanding its production capacity by four per cent a year meaning three new Canadian smelters in the next 20 years but the vagaries of the world Market could postpone construction schedules Jacques Bougie Alcan s Manitoba director of development said. Bougie did say he hoped construction of the smelter could begin within months of the decision to build being made. It will be built in three phases but May not take the full four years to build. The company generally is looking for a site within easy driving distance of Winnipeg and not on prime agricultural land. Bougie said a More specific list of site requirements will be released within two weeks after which Alcan officials will meet with representatives from interested municipalities. He is not worried about speculators be cause there Are too Many possible locations in a 40 to 80-Kilometre radius of Winnipeg for speculators to really have a Chance at pick ing the right one. Alcan also will Check for recent land sales in an area before buying to protect itself against speculators he added.
