Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 20, 1981, Winnipeg, Manitoba 8 Winnipeg free press saturday june pc Domino to seek nod in Wolseley by Mary Ann Fitzgerald conservative Bac Bencher ten Domino whose St. Matthews Riding disappears with with the Advent of new electoral boundaries will seek his party s nomination in the Wolseley constituency. The Wolseley seat was officially declared vacant this week after the supreme court of Canada refused to hear former conservative la Bob Wilson s Appeal on drug conspiracy charges. Wilson is serving seven years in prison on the charges. The decision Means Domino will drop his Battle with Community services minister George Minaker for the Nomi nation in St. James whose new boundaries will take in a substantial chunk of the former St. Matthews constituency. I m tired of fighting conservatives i d rather spend time fighting the opposition than our Domino said in an interview. Minaker was unavailable for comment yesterday. Domino said his decision came after talks with Premier Sterling Lyon who has also asked him to represent both St. Matthews and Wolseley until the Wolseley matter is cleared Domino admitted yester Day he has been under great pressure from the caucus to drop his attempts to oust Minaker from the St. James nomination and not to spend our energies fight ing among but the Premier was very careful not to apply said Domino who has bucked his party s stand on some issues. Domino lives and teaches school in Wolseley constituency which takes in about 25 per cent of the old St. Matthews Riding under new elec toral boundaries. Prior to Wilson s conviction on charges of conspiring _ to import and traffic in Mari Domino decides Juana Domino said he had promised his former caucus colleague he would t seek the nomination there. Wilson was expelled from the conserva Tive party last december after his initial conviction. I believed very strongly As Long As there was a Chance that Bob Wilson was innocent i should t close him Domino said yesterday. Domino says he does t think Wilson s conviction will be a liability to him As a tory candidate. There is a general feeling that Bob Wilson As a person made a big mistake. That s not the fault of the conservative Wolseley is considered a swing Riding. It was the seat of former conservative Premier Duff Roblin and it has been held by liberals including former Liberal Leader Izzy Asper. Wilson won the seat for the tories in a 1975 Bielec Tion but the new democrats have come a close second in the last two elections. R3c 3l6 control of resources urged former nip Leader says multinationals milk Canada Douglas canadians squandering resources by Ron Campbell Winnipeg free press Anola now is the time for canadians to take control of their Oil Gas and Coal resources or they will be at the mercy of multinational corporations when the resources Are depleted former Federal new demo cratic party Leader Tommy Douglas said yesterday. He said the country s Energy re sources should be under the control of government co operatives or Small businesses that government can take Over later. Douglas 76, was featured speaker at a fund raising dinner and social for the Springfield constituency nip association which has nominated Andrue Anstett As its candidate in the next provincial elec Tion. More than 300 people attended the event at the Anola Community Centre including provincial nip Leader Howard Pawley Winnipeg Bird s Hill my Bill Blaikie six other members of the provincial legislature eight other nip provincial candidates three prospective candidates Mani Toba nip president Bill Regehr and Manitoba federation of labor presi Dent Dick Martin. Prime minister Pierre Trudeau s program for 50-per-cent Canadian ownership of the country s Energy re sources by 1990 in t fast enough Douglas said. So per cent of nothing "by_1990 there won t be any Light Oil left there s no use owning per cent of meanwhile the private Oil corporations will make More than billion in profits Over the next decade from what is left he said. Canadians need control of their own Energy resources to earn the Money needed to find and develop new Energy supplies including Grain Alco hol solar nuclear and biomass As Well As Fossil fuels Douglas said. If it s left to the multinationals the Day will come when you will be faced with drilling holes in the ground the Oil and Gas will be gone and you won t have a Nickel saved up to find new sources of they will then have ownership and control of substitute fuels and canadians will be faced with the same kind of economic slavery the same kind of economic exploitation As has resulted from multinational corporations owning Fossil fuel production he said. Douglas said that 30 years ago he was complaining about Canada exporting 65 per cent of its Oil product Ion and his prediction that some Day Canada would import Oil was met with contempt. Today Canada imports 25 per cent of its Oil needs at the world Price of a barrel where it used to sell its Oil at j3 a barrel. Canada now is doing exactly the same thing with its natural Gas production exporting 65 per cent of it at ridiculously Low Douglas said. Canadians have no right to squander the resources left to succeeding generations he said.
