Doctors said the tests on the 61-year-old pontiff would help determine if he has pneumonia or pleurisy an inflammation of the membrane that covers the lung and causes difficult painful breathing. A Ray technicians said the Pope had a Chest a Ray an a Ray of his Abdomen and a barium enema. The Chest x Ray would reveal if he had pneumonia pleurisy or any other lung infection and the a Ray of the Abdomen and the barium enema would show if there were any abscess formations or any scar tissue in the Large intestine doctors said. John Paul was returned to Gemelli Hospital saturday after running a fever for several Days. His doctors at first feared he had an infection in his intestines where he was shot May 13 As he greeted crowds in St. Peter s Square. The Pope May have a lung infection but we Don t think there is anything wrong with his Hospital spokesman or. Giuseppe Pallank said sunday. Or. Emilio , chief medical officer for the Hospi Tal said the Pope s life was not in danger. Or. Luigi can Dia said he was on a Normal diet indicating the fever was not caused by intestinal infection. Slow Laboured voice the Pope wheezed and spoke in a slow Laboured voice As he delivered a taped three minute broadcast at noon sunday in St. Peter s Square to tourists and pilgrims. The message was recorded saturday the Vatican said. The pontiff still needs an operation to reverse the intestinal bypass performed after he was shot. Vatican sources said last week that the operation would be per formed in july. Meanwhile police investigators said they Are convinced that Mehmet Ali Aga the 23-year-old Turk accused of shooting the Pope was acting on the orders of a terrorist group but they Don t know the identity of the organization. Until we know the organization behind this person we still won t understand the motive for the said Alfredo Lazzerini head of the Rome police s anti terrorist squad who is in charge of the investigation. Aga is charged with attempted murder of the Pope and of two american women wounded in the attack. Investigators say they have linked him to right Wing groups in Turkey and West Germany. The investigators have found that Aga was almost always alone after his escape in november 1979 from a turkish jail where he was being held on a murder charge. But police have confirmed that he telephoned a suspected member of a right Wing turkish nationalist group the Gray wolves a month before the assassination attempt. Police say they Don t know what was discussed. Turkish authorities say Aga is mentally unbalanced but the italian police say he is Cool Lucid and self controlled. He s not Lazzerini said. He s a Chapman s trial slated to begin new York a jury selection in the murder trial of Mark David Chapman accused of shooting former Beetle John Lennon was scheduled to begin today amid tight courtroom Security. Chapman s lawyer does not dispute that the former mental patient 26, gunned Down Lennon outside the Rock music superstar s Manhattan apartment building last december and the Case will focus on whether Chapman was sane at the time. Both prosecutors and Chapman s lawyer Jonathan Marks said they Are ready for trial but it was t certain yesterday there would be one. Marks declined comment on a news report that his client whom he described As sick and wants to plead guilty to the second degree murder charge on instructions from god. I m not disputing that he killed or. Marks said. It was obviously a premeditated for Chapman to be acquitted Marks must prove his client was not responsible for the slaying that he suffered a mental disease or defect that affected his capacity to understand the moral but not necessarily the Legal wrongfulness of the act. If judged not Chapman could be kept in psychiatric hospitals until he is diagnosed As sane. If convicted he could be sent to prison. The maximum prison penalty is 25 years to life. Terrorists behind Aga police believe which group or Why still mystery to italian investigators Rome a investigators say they Are increasingly convinced the Man accused of shooting Pope John Paul acted on behalf of a terrorist group but they still Don t know for which group or Why. After five weeks of interrogations Mehmet Ali Aga 23, a Turk charged with attempted murder of the roman Catholic pontiff and two american women wounded in the attack May 13 in St. Peter s Square remains an Enigma to police. Investigators have tracked Down ties Aga had to right Wing groups in Turkey and West Germany but have been unable to determine whether one of these groups any others ordered him to kill the Pope. Evidence circumstantial we re trying to find out what group he acted Alfredo Lazzerini head of the Rome police s anti terrorist squad who is in charge of the investigation said in an interview. He still says he acted alone. But it seems More probable he did it for some police admit the Only evidence they have of a conspiracy is circumstantial and have not ruled out the possibility that Aga planned and executed the attack by him self. World he is being held in isolation in the Reb Ibbia maximum Security prison 16 kilo metres East of Rome with two guards outside his drab Gray cell at All times. Police say he eats simple meals of fruit and vegetables and refuses to drink wine or eat pork in keeping with his islamic Faith. Police who have reduced their daily interrogations to weekly questioning say Aga is Well trained in shooting fire arms and travelled through Europe and North Africa after his escape from a turkish jail in november 1979. The investigation indicates he was almost always alone made almost no Telephone Calls from the fancy resort hotels and cheap student lodgings in which he stayed and left few traces of his travels. Police know Aga spent time in Tunisia Spain Switzerland Belgium and Italy and they believe he visited West Germany Yugoslavia Bulgaria Syria Lebanon and Iran. Police have confirmed he made a Tele phone Call april 14 from the Torino hotel in Rome to Hassan Taskin a suspected Mem Ber of the right Wing turkish nationalist group called the Gray wolves near Munich West Germany. But they do not know what Aga and Taskin discussed in that Call. Motive unknown until we know the organization be Hind this person we won t understand the motive for the Lazzerini said. If we take the hypothesis that he tried to kill the Pope for the Gray wolves whose members Are his motive might have been that the Pope was a Symbol of a military court in Istanbul Turkey last tuesday convicted a prison guard buy Amin Yilmaz of helping Aga escape from the maximum Security jail where he was awaiting trial on charges of murdering a journalist. Aga was convicted in absent a in april 1980, and sentenced to death. Yilmaz admitted he was a sympathizer of the nationalist idealists a right Wing group whose aim unite what they Call enslaved turkish tribes in the soviet Union Iran Iraq Bulgaria Greece and Syria. Both the idealists and the Gray wolves Are believed to be supported by the now illegal extreme rightist action party led by sex col. Alparslan Turkes.
