Family ponders Legal action Over death at Misericordia by Maureen Brosnahan the family of a woman 65, who died at Misericordia Hospital last month a Day after being asked by a nurse to clean up food she had spilled on the floor is not satisfied with a Hospital report into the incident and May seek Legal action. Joe and Ilona Smith of fort Garry complained to health minister l. R. Bud Sherman after mrs. Smith s Mother Frances Sutch died in Miseri Cordia May 27, weeks after she was admitted for internal Hemo raging. Sherman had asked the Manitoba health services commission to look into the matter and a Hospital report was forwarded to Sherman s office. The health minister said he is satisfied the woman received proper treatment in the Hospital. But Smith Sale he s not satisfied and plans to see a lawyer today what has the Smiths upset is an. Incident which began when the woman is reported to have pushed her lunch tray away spilling her food on to the floor. The attending nurse requested Sutch s help in cleaning it up. Sutch died the following Day. The family says it feels the nurse s action was detrimental to Sutch s health the Smiths said that Sutch was weak and vomiting blood and was barely Able to get out of bed when the incident occurred. The Smiths said they Learned of the incident shortly before Sutch died when the nurse took mrs. Smith aside and told her what had happened. Mrs. Smith said the nurse broke Down and tried to convince her that making her Mother clean up the food was proper procedure and was done As a lesson to the elderly woman. Sherman said As a result of the report. He has received he is satisfied the Dent was thoroughly investigated and proper procedures had been carried out. Hospital administrator Ted Bartman said Sutch was prone to throwing her food around the room. But the Smiths said it was Only a single occur Ance.
