The most severe psychological blows to British Pride were in the announce ment that Chatham dockyard founded by King Henry Viii will close by 1984, with the anticipated loss of More than jobs and the severe contraction of Portsmouth the Navy s pre Mier base where Admiral Nelson s flagship . Victory is berthed. The future of the British dockyard at Gibraltar also will be reviewed. World defence Secretary John Nott announced the cuts yesterday in the House of commons but insisted that Britain will emerge from them with leaner More efficient armed forces. Nott was in the United states last week and in West Germany earlier this week to explain to defence officials what the British plans involve. The press association reported that vice president George Bush who arrived yesterday in London said he was not too concerned about the cuts. Bush met with lord Carrington the foreign Secretary and said they discus sed almost every Issue on the except defence.
