Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 26, 1981, Winnipeg, Manitoba 2 Winnipeg free frees. Friday. June Malo Quarter horse loses her foal and acquires a suckling Moose calf it was love at first sight when Betsy met Moose. The jangly whimpering creature with big eyes and ears was a pathetic sight All right but he needed her. And admittedly she needed him too. Betsy a 10-year-old Quarter horse has been suckling the baby Moose since it was brought to Desrosiers farm in St. Malo a month ago. She just took it when we brought it close to said Marilyn Desro Siers 18, and she gets nervous when we take him Moose follows her everywhere just As if she was his she said. R. Betsy had milk because she d recently lost her foal when it drowned in the rat River while she was giving birth. Ironically Moose s Mother had abandoned him after giving birth to twins because she was too Small to feed them both. Only about three weeks old at the time Moose had wandered onto a Road in Swan River in Northern Mani Toba where he was spotted by six members of the Desrosiers family on their Way to a Cousin s wedding. They brought him Home in the trailer despite Mother s reluctance said Marilyn the eldest child of four. Moose a s fed from a baby bottle his first Day on the 32tecre beef farm because no one expected stubborn Betsy to adopt the mewling animal. We be never heard of such a said Marilyn the whole town has come by. To see Moose supplements Mother s milk with Long grass because his legs Are too Long to eat off the ground As cows do said Marilyn. He s perfectly healthy and she said. The fact that Moose is neither calf nor Colt does t bother Betsy. The two sleep together and Moose Lopes dete r Minerly after the Brown horse when Ever she leaves the barn. Moose is an affectionate animal who puzzles everything from Chick ens to camera equipment and she enjoys playing bully with the Desrosiers children. Marilyn said rangers have investigated the unusual situation and plat to place the Moose in a zoo for either wild or farm animals sometime in the future. Joan Wilson of the humane so-., piety s wildlife research said Moose Are found in Northern Manitoba the Interlake Region Spruce Wood and Turtle Mountain provincial Parks. She said the Success rate of a Moose adapting to a natural habitat after being raised As a Domestic animal was very Low. It s not she said but it s High interest rates Factor in bankruptcy by Irig Eborg Boyens even with interest rates nudging 22 per cent lenders continue to encourage Consumers to borrow. And they do borrow. To buy new cars new stereos to pay their Bills. Consumer spending habits Haven t been said Alex Milton Man Ager of the Manitoba chamber of com Merce. People have already begun to accept the the Federal government began Rais ing the Bank of Canada rate about 10 months ago in attempt to curb spending and inflation. Yet this week when rates charged of the Best corporate customers stood at 20 per cent buying was still rampant the High rates Don t appear to have discouraged buying As the government had said Jack Mcdonald chairman of the Manitoba committee of the Canadian Bankers association and vice president of the Royal Bank. The outstanding consumer credit is larger than Ever before said Gordon Cairns the official receiver for the bankruptcy office. Has consequences Cairns who files the bankruptcy notices of the Many who can t handle credit said buying with borrowed Money has its consequences. Living it tithe y in the first four months of this year 359 individuals and businesses in Mani Toba and Northwestern Ontario went bankrupt. Although it is difficult to determine whether borrowing costs Are to blame for personal bankruptcies Cairns said interest rates Are Likely a Factor. Cairns said More people Are also going broke these Days because bankruptcy is becoming More socially acceptable. The stigma in t that bad any he said. Individuals who filed for bankruptcy As a last resort were reluctant to talk publicly about their financial woes. Debts typically ranged from As Little As in one Case to at the other end of the scale. The creditors were often department stores Banks and charge card companies. Milton Sussman executive director of the credit counselling Bureau said people began to borrow just to get by Between pay cheques once interest rates began to Rise. Over the past 10 months the number of people approaching the Bureau for counselling has increased said suss Man. About 35 new clients now walk through the door each month compared to 25 one year ago. Another income source smart Consumers have simply adjusted their buying to the Ever escalating rates. Those who Are not assume their credit cards Are simply another source of income he said. They figure they can go and buy whatever they said Sussman. Most Consumers end up in debt after a personal crisis such As divorce pushed them Over Over the Edge. Sussman said clients Are told they must shop around if they want to borrow or buy on credit. And above All they Are told to budget their Priori ties. Sussman said most Consumers have come to accept the High interest rates. There is a real mentality that High interest rates Are going to be Here for a he said.
