Anne Ross said the North end clinic May withdraw from United Way after being awarded less than one third of the Grant requested for the 1981-82 fiscal year. The United Way s allocation of 000 was requested Means the clinic May drop its pharmacy and dental clinic in the coming year. United Way has supported a nutritionist for the last three years on condition that the clinic do a study establishing that persons who Don t have proper nutrition run a High risk of complications during pregnancy. Ross said the study was a Case of re inventing the wheel. Countless studies have been she said. She cited a British study which showed that girls under 16 had double the number of stillbirths than women in their 20s. Also an american study has shown that 50 per cent of mental retardation can be stopped by proper nutrition. However funding for the nutritionist terminated when the study was finished. Morley Globerman chairman of finance for the clinic said he thinks the United Way is not performing its Grant function properly. They re being he said it s not right to be so mount Carmel will Appeal the fund ing decision at a meeting with the United Way on july 15. If the clinic does t receive a significant increase it May withdraw from the United Way said Globerman. In that Case possible sources of fund ing Are fund raising events requests for donations and the rebirth of a women s auxiliary said Ross. Currently the clinic receives about a year from the provincial health department and Manitoba health services commission. Harold Bell of transport Canada who led the Winnipeg area airports systems study had hoped a version of expansion recommendations would be ready this month but apparently All facets have not been pulled together.
