Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 12, 1985, Winnipeg, Manitoba 6 Winnipeg free May Phil free press physicist discounts nuclear Power fear radioactive waste from burning Coal a a Wjk Al a a considered Greate i recently spoke with physicist Bernard who received the 1981 american physical society Bonner prize for nuclear physics Cohen has been one of the More visible proponents of nuclear mis most recent Book is entitled before its too a scientists Case for nuclear people often read about accidents and leaks in nuclear Power there afraid of a big Accident that will kill Many is their fear justified its but its very in when you multiply the consequences by the probabilities for an nuclear Power turns out to be exceedingly arty technology has accidents in which a lot of people can be almost any technology can have tragedies worse than Are usually considered for nuclear its Only in the nuclear Case that these things Are discus sed in the and where people seem to have a fear of worst Accident what is the worst Accident that occur in a nuclear Power and what Are its chances of happening if youre talking about a nuclear Accident that would happen once in a million if All the electric Power in the United states were then it would be something like the Accident that gets discussed a where the total number of deaths would be something like 45 or 50 thou Only a Small fraction of them would be the great majority of them would be from cancer Many years is this a meltdown youre talking about this would be the worst Type of meltdown Only one out of would you agree that nuclear waste is dangerous its easily shown that nuclear waste is much less harmful to human health than the waste from almost any other Large in for there Are three different types of waste from Coal each of which will eventually kill thousands of times As Many people As nuclear one of these is air poll another is ing chemicals released in Coal and that last fore things like cadmium and last longer they last longer plutonium they last plutonium Only lasts for on an the third Type of waste from Coal believe it or is radioactive because Coal contains a Small amount of and when the Coal is this is spread out All Over the this eventually will cause a lot of deaths due to the radon Gas that it is nuclear waste disposal an easy matter it could be an easy you just convert it into a Rock and where the rocks Are if permanent High level waste storage is so Safe and Why int it being done there is a program to do its being done far More careful spending far More Money than and the reason is that the Public is what about radiation vented by nuclear Power plants that a very Well studied subject and lots of data on it because its happening All the one Way to put perspective on that is that if we had All to health nuclear age Lewis Rotstein nuclear Power in this the average person would lose about 30 minutes of life expectancy due to this so called routine emission of for smoking reduces our life expectancy by six or seven being poor reduces your life by about four being 25 pounds overweight takes about two years off your this is assuming you know with certainty the Lon term effects of these Low Levels of and scientists dont because there int enough hard data to go we know the effects of High level and we assume the effects of this Low level Radia Tion Are proportionately which is a worst Case that theres All sorts of Evi Dence that it cant be worse than that and it can very Well be better than but there Are scientists who nay it might be worse than that at Low certainly the science behind it is very strongly against these few scientists who say that have published practically Noth ing in the scientific the one scientific paper that makes that claim has drawn Over 20 alternatives what do you say to those who say we can get along with alternative Type Power when the Fossil fuels run out you can always do except the Price is nuclear Power even now would be considerably cheaper than any of with the possible exception of wind which int very practical to stand alone because it Only when the wind is blow Why Arent nuclear Power plants being built in America the costs have just been driven out of the direct cause is that the government has con stantly tightened up this has driven up the Cost of a Plant five times above inflation Over the past dozen the tightening of regulations is due completely to political pressure driven by Public and the Root of this concern the one thing i can state without any question As a and ill get you any number of scientists to Back me is that the Media has deceived the Public very Why the motives behind the Media actions Are very mystifying to i used to think they just didst but Ive had enough Contact with Media people by now that i really Down deep think they know what there doing and there purposely doing your Book is called before its too before its too late for what the soviet and so build up their economies by using nuclear for exam will eventually have electric Ity for half the Cost that the gets if we dont do something soon to save nuclear Power in the we Are going to become a poor rela Tive to the rest of the Lewis Rothlein syndicated column on scientific and political issues in the nuclear Field appears sundays in the free fewer offenders chose Community work last year Ponape by Cecil
