free May 1j Crosbie disputes press reports of opposition to elected Senate Ottawa of Justice minister John Cros Bie is insisting that the Canadian press erred last wednesday in saying he had indicated at a news conference the conservatives oppose an elected the following is a partial text of his remarks at the news conference if you have any questions that you want to ask me 1 will do my Best to answer is abolishing the Senate ruled out by this government 1 cant say that its ruled out but i think that an option that obviously there but 1 dont think it would be certainly not to some of the and to abolish the Senate t think that we would have to have the concurrence of All 10 what kind of Senate reforms would the government like to see we Haven made any decision our selves yet on what Lon term reforms to the Senate should As you there was a joint committee about a year ago to consider this we Haven decided yet on what our Lon term position will that something Well decide Over the next year or getting ready for the next two getting ready for the ence the prime minister has so our minds Are open on the subject As do you realistically think it is possible to have an elected since the provinces in the last 4050 years have become the regional spokesmen Well its some of those same provinces that Are quite keen on having an elected Alberta for there quite interested in the Senate we Haven finally decided Winnipeg professionals Volvo lease we lease for less 1985 Volvo dla4 4 Power 2000 4 month imm Mac Portage at ctn is s Block of Polo perk Matthon motors 7863458 5oz off All frames Fie if that was the decision then t believe that they would have a very Strong argument that they should have Powers equal to Thole of the House of if there then they could argue they represent the people of Canada As that has obvious problems because its difficult enough to govern Canada anyway without another Independent authority theft to say yes or no to everything that that would be one of the problems Are you willing to give the provinces a Sty la appointing senators t mean there int anything fitted that one a different method of what do you think of the idea yourself i would say that it has some because Well because you dont have one Patty and one Federal party Only who nominate All tit members of the if the provinces Given some right of appointments it would mean that you would have a Senate less de by any one less Prospect of it being dominated As it is now by one 90 that has some is that the most Likely course in there Are problems of As you and there Are problems with elected Art we moving More towards something like that i think that we Are moving away from the if the Senate is to 1 there is a wide measure of agreement that total appointment by the Federal government is not satisfactory because it ends up in situations that we have like we have with the huge dominant majority in the Senate of just one party and it cant fulfil any role representing regions or whatever because there dominated by party you by their party if you changed it How would you get rid of the current makeup of the Senate or would it be a phase in till the year 2010 Well this is something that will have to be worked out with the provinces even if you were going to elect a Senate you could do it in a staggered Way so it didst All occur overnight there Are any number of options say half appointed by the provinces and half by the Federal is that the Way you might be looking at it in not saying that the government is proposing in just saying that one reason Able method that should be considered Are you committed still to the idea of the Primacy of the House of commons if both Are then Well have to decide whether the elected Senate is going to have similar you know that is an Issue that Well have to Deal with but As Long As the Senate is in my there is no Way it should be permitted to Stop and veto legislation that comes from the lower elected to lease 1985 Lynx
