is Strong and even without looking at the Stock you know this is a Strong probability most shares la belled interest sensitive Are Riding interest rates have been halved from the frightening peaks of the Early any Stock much affected by these Money costs has to be fatty priced if not blighted by other there led by record setting Bell at Early this the widely owned Issue com pares with last years Low of and a Low of in that terrific for a supposedly conservative investment of is no longer As staid As it once thet typical Canadian share has risen Good Deal the year 1981 is chosen for com Parison for two it was one of ultrahigh interest Topping 20 per cent for mortgages and corporate Bank and the Market began collapsing disastrously late that year because of fears that a horrendous recess Ion was coming which it unlike Bells Rush the Large gains of Many other interest sensitive stocks get Little though canadians have billions in the Day today publicity goes to other issues that swing More in the Short but a look at a representative group of 16 reveals most have Strong gains and emphasizes a key Rice i Ivray n i Money costs drop Sajt other higher than lows of about in 81 a company May have a Large and last Jack Mcarthur fact the nature and effects of sensitivity differ from Stock to on the 16 issues Early this week were about 90 per cent above their 81 lows and More than 40 per cent higher than lows for when interest rates Are they tend to be and vice the bes known reason is this Good examples Many conservative investors own certain shares largely because of the relatively High and steady dividends the companies pay on they wont bid As much for those shares when they can instead get particularly High returns on deposits and debt this Lack of demand depresses the when interest rates Are bid higher to get those Divi utilities Are Good maritime Telegraph and Tele phone Stock was As Low As four but sold lately above Consumers Gas topped but was after being listed in stocks also May be interest sen in Large part or for other a company May have a Large floating rate the costs of which Rise and fall with changes in Short term of it May be heavily into real estate develop a business that often sickens when fates Are Gen staf has battled both prob its shares were below amid High interest rates four years ago but above this financial institutions shares have some of that classic dividend sensitiveness but another Angle be came important for the High loan costs of the Early 80s combined with the recession and the big debts of Many Bank customers to raise serious doubts about bad an increasing number of Bor rowers others were How Many corporations would hit this financial Wall How Exten sively would the Loans have to be written stretched out or restructured How serious might Sim Ilar problems be for heavily indebted third world nations in this our lower interest rates though still High related to other economic factors Are Wel come for they breathe More their customers have a better shot at bearing their lighter some worry its under lined by troubles at some inst the bailing out of a Western Canadian Bank and the Bank of emergency Bank stocks Arent especially High despite the favourable interest Bank of recently above is Only moderately higher than lows of about in 81 and last the Toronto exchanges sub group of Bank shares Early this week was 50 per cent above its 81 the interest sensitive Utility and pipeline groups were up 131 per cent and 77 per cent respective the effects of interest trends can vary widely from company to com Pany and from time to companies for change the mix of their moving into industries less Sensi Tive and attracting investors who care less about dividend Bells phone business creates dividend related interest sensitive but Bells less sensitive North Ern telecoms subsidiary has grown most sensitive its Purchase of control of Large Tran Canada pipelines also is in while that company has natural Gas pipeline operations that promote sensitivity it also is a major Oil Gas among the least publicized most sensitive Are dozens of straight preferred shares usually bought for their dividend in their quiet they look Good example the class series 4 preferred of steelmaker its owners get a fixed annual dividend of per the Stock was Down around at times in 81 and it was above this that reminds us that even such conservative stocks can Bounce around when interest rates do the Toronto Star japanese automakers plan for future by Keith Stafford Tokyo Reuter Japan has the largest automobile Industry in the world and it Hopes to maintain that position As Long As it can by design ing what it sees As the car of the despite a number of problems hurting their japanese car makers Are searching for new mar production methods and Model coming years will see More tech Nical innovation and More product Ion overseas As Well As a fierce Battle for the japanese Domestic the Industry prospects Are a great Deal More volatile than in the said Mazda president Kenichi engineers and designers in Japan say the family with its familiar shows no signs of changing its fundamental character Over the next few they also say the recent decline in Oil prices has put ideas for alter a Tiv fuel engines Back on research Institute although most engineers think the ideas will be dusted1 off and go under car hoods some time in the we Are still using but by the year 2000 it could run out so then we will have to move to differ ent although engines wont change said Hiroyuki director of research and development for but he thinks cars with gliding along without Drivers and map Reading for Are still not ready to pay Price Consumers Are not ready to pay the after 10 or 15 years we will be Able the automobile making two Cylinder but it faltered like others in the face of a flood of cheaper a resurrection began in the 1930s with Nissan starting production in 1931 and Toyota in these two firms now dominate the joined by Honda in the 1960s when it added cars to its highly successful motorcycle last year they and the other half dozen japanese car firms Here produced More than seven million the worlds largest ahead of the million made in the United during the just Over six million were exports Are a continuing headache for the foreign markets provide the bulk of their profits and without them they cannot survive because the roads at Are a but car industries form the Core of most Industrial societies and Many countries have forced the japanese to restrain fearing their cheap robot manufactured imports will kill Home the japanese have responded by moving says Nissan presi Dent Takashi Ishihara by invest ing in manufacturing plants Over seas we contribute to the economies of the countries we operate creating employment opportunities and assisting in the technological advancement of those the move of Toyota and Honda to greater overseas product Ion prompts Industry analysts to suggest Japan will lose its position As world production Leader some time in the in production will reach million against japans Mil lion but one million of the cars produced the United states will come from japanese says the automotive news of an Industry the japanese also face new competitors in the Battle for overseas markets while other countries want to Start producing their own meaning japanese cars sold Well in the like Are Bent on creating their own Competition Savage As far As the japanese Domestic Market is the govern ment reckons japanese car firms will be they can achieve a meagre three percent annual sales growth in the next few Domestic Competition is Savage and the car firms constantly seek new ideas to help them master right now the emphasis is on Micro cars of less
