her knowledge and at the Centre of social change Ina City then bustling with activity and Hind had few there was no one quite like not and in a certain not a Toronto writer and Points out that the kind of escapades engaged in by Hind and the very few other women journalists of the be possible the Job has become More pro More More there Are Many More women in journalism today its been years since it was freakish to see a woman in the but yet no women currently in Televik or print in Canada has quite the authority of a Cora and until theres some form of affirmative action in the theres not Likely to says she said during a Stopover in Winnipeg to promote her have advanced to one their bylines Are seen in their voices announce the news on their faces Are seen fronting respected television programs such As abcs the weve reached a critical she there is a substantial percentage of women in but we need an equal in the Long run that the hardest thing of Golden Triangle where women continue to Lack Power is in the real decision making she though some women have reached significant manage ment positions in the Csc which from time to got on the affirmative action women in authority in privately owned particularly new spa she Are having interviewed some 100 women virtually All of them in the Golden Triangle of Toront Ottawa Montreal working in and including Well known ones such As Barbara june Call Barbara and Betty Crean has come to the familiar conclusion that women Are excluded because men operate with in their own networks of male col leagues who share Points of View vulgarities which women do or will not and she Doest expect these men to have a feminist version of the Sundance youth has stuff to be astronaut by Kevin Prokosh Grade 6 student Robin Johns of pushups for every minute i was always 15 minutes even the food is typical of Boot Camp said sticking out his the boys Learned of the space Camp located in earlier this year when they saw the director interviewed on abcs Switchback they decided to ask their parents if they could at their Mother that even if they missed two weeks of the trip would be an Educa Tion in i wanted them to said Fia i thought it was a unique Opportunity it would be Good to experience science first its topical it was the late Wernher von the father of the space who conceived of the Camp a decade ago As a training ground for the next generation of space unlike Many boys and girls who Robin and brother Marcus in Camp togs dream of becoming an Robin was initially intent on be coming a but he has changed his mind and Hopes to return to the space Camp for the More advanced level in a couple of i found out at the Camp just How interesting being an Astro naut could he on their return flight from to Ronto the boys visited the aircraft flight familiar with the complicated control Board of the space Robin immediately spied a Light which was a signal that later could Block the deploying of the Landing i just told the Copilot that it was said the shy you miss he just and turned it make your children do their own Homework Ive always maintained that the More Independent a child is where Homework is the better his or her Overall school performance will in other parents for the most stay out of Homework the More involved the the less responsible the and the less his or her regular readers May recall a column of several months past on this very in which i outlined my six Point plan for getting children to do their Homework one of those Points called for parents to set an upper limit on Home leaving the child free to decide when to that after the Way the world most frequently oper ates around the Issue of Respo Sibili on the for one is usually told not when to Start a particular but when it is i ended my advice on this Point by the shortest route to a nightly never ending Homework Marathon is to Tell a child when to begin but not when he must be another piece of advice was for parents to give help Only where help was absolutely but not Sim ply to save the child Effort or frus on this parents have often asked whether they should do such things As help children prepare for spelling tests by Reading the weeks word resourceful ways in my feeling about this is there Are resourceful ways a child can go about creating this sort of Aid without parental for a Small cassette recorder is parents can easily teach a child to make a review tape of the weeks the child pronounces a word into the Waits 15 Sec spells the word and then re Peats the process for the next the emphasis is on response 1 recently passed my six Point Homework plan on to the parents of a fourth Grade boy who had succeeded at getting his Mother to sit through Homework with him nearly every the Homework Marathon was consuming the Fame Lys complicating matters was the fact that the boy attended an i school learning disabilities this Only served to reinforce the parents belief that he needed lots of help with his mom viewed her nightly As absolutely parents John Rosemond she was convinced that without her support he would suffer total academic needless to convincing these folks to implement my six Point program was no Small Job of but they they set an upper limit on Homework of 8 and be came occasional rather than full time after some initial displays of the boy began doing his Homework pretty much on his in his room rather than at the Kitchen table As at 8 whether he was finished or his parents made him put his books aside and prepare for his 9 within sever Al his teachers reported that not Only was he completing More work in but that the Quality of his work was natural the boys self esteem also began to Rise As he realized that he was indeed mom was much less but continued the practice of calling out spelling words on thursday in preparation for fridays one such thursday saw the boy wasting time instead of the parents said at he panicked and asked mom to read his words to she pointing out that Home work time was he was beside insisting that he would surely fail the next Days test and that it would be his mothers it was she recount ing the Here there was a whole hour before his bedtime that i could have helped but i so what did he do i she the next he used the half hour be tween when he gets to school and the first Bell to study his it was the first time hed studied them All on his so Howd he do on the test you wont believe mom he got the highest Grade in the the Best Hes Ever i had no trouble believing it at the views expressed Are those of the a family psychologist occurs More often in no athletes than it does in Tennis it can develop from localized in overuse and other Well Call the disorder by its other lateral the symptoms Are pain Over the lateral or outside aspect of the Elbow often the pain radiates Down the its aggravated by any activity which puts tension on the Muscles that extend the when the pain occurs on the inner Side of the the condition is called medial Picon Kylitis is common but How common is anyone in one random study of 200 Tennis players Over the age of half had experienced Elbow pain at one time or of this group of half had minor problems lasting six months or less the other half had More difficulties with symptoms lasting an average of but its fair to based on other Stu that a Large majority of patients with Picon Kylitis improve with time and the exact cause is a in one published report of More than patients diagnosed As having Picon Kylitis Over a 20year 339 were contacted to see How they what happened to the two thirds that we rent followed up is a whats though the doctor had a Large Black patient none of the 339 was so this was a biased less than five per cent of those contacted played Golf or con firming that anyone can get Elbow All the 339 patients were initially treated conservatively no treatment included limitation of immobilization with a plaster wrist splint and injections with of the 278 responded another 39 who didst were operated though the reports authors made no one can assume there must have been 22 patients who still had symptoms but didst have sur most of the patients operated on had Tendon some had in All that was found was some scar two patients had virtually Normal the authors say All 39 ended up with satisfactory pos surgical results after a re covery period of six to 12 health Howard in another covering 871 a 37 patients who didst respond to conservative treatment had sur various operations were per and 26 had Good results these two poorly done studies show that most people with Tennis Elbow get the medical liter in indicates three to eight per cent dont get better and for surgery might be the an but if the pathology is in what surgery it seems Dif Ferent surgeons prefer different in before you contemplate an it would be Best to try All other and have a Good talk with your surgeon before you sign the operative As for conservative rest and decreased activity Are Good for acute injuries should be cooled using ice this should be combined with gentle stretching once the inflammation has died the ice is replaced with some authors suggest non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such As or others suggest cortisone some recommend wrist others a tight no elastic band below the exercises go from simply flexing and extending the wrist to elaborate ones using weights and ultrasound treatments seem to work for Many if the problem is theres a Host of improvements you can make to your game and Picon Kylitis requires much my own experience suggests it usually clears up regard less of what you but it May take i can Only suggest you find an experienced therapist and ask lots of the views expressed Are those of the a practising although
