longstanding incumbents in Henderson and Elmwood wards Are staring into the possible future of City poli tics As they both Are challenged by 21yearold Don Mitchelson Henderson and Alf Skowron Elmwood Are facing opposition this year from a pair of University of Winnipeg students who Are High on Christian a firs time candidate and student of Canadian studies and political science at the u of said civic politics has Long been a Hobby and this year he Felt he was ready to but who is running As a win also said he is disillusioned with the performance of the current councillors and the Emer gence of the gang of the informal caucus in City in disappointed in the Way City politics has been going in the last few said at the Root of this is the Treyve made City Council a secretive and Cli Quish they meet separately to predetermine City Hall they Are accountable to themselves and not to the tax pay Cassidy said he is looking Forward to challenging the Mil who is widely known As the chairman of the people Are getting More educated and they Are fed they Are looking a Little More closely at who they Are Cassidy is joined by firs time candidate Helen a real estate Unruh takes no Issue with the performance of Mitchelson or the but said the Ward is ready for a the Deputy mayor who has suffered a lot of criticism for his involvement in the said he is ready to defend the actions of the that win newly created organization that has endorsed 16 candidates in this years election would be so Quick to criticize the gang when its composition is equally As i agree with a lot of what win is said but win is comprised of liberals and new democrats in they Are socialists and left wingers who Are against Urban Cut Council Mitchelson said he will be campaigning on his record As a Council while pushing for an extensive recycling a reduction in the size of City Council and the revitalization of the North main Street in the youth movement is also making its presence Skowron is being opposed by Mark a firs time candidate taking Urban studies at the u of w who was born just after Skowron was first elected to Miller said he decided to act on a lifetime interest in politics by throw ing his hat into the ring against the perennial Miller said he wants to Challenge the parochialism that exists at City Hall and make Council More in not saying that in an authority on these he but new ideas Are needed at City Miller said he would like to see the budget process at City Hall open to More Public scrutiny and supports the introduction of a comprehensive recycling also joining the race is Lillian a sociologist who is running under the win Banner this in keeping with the win is opposed to the influences of the gang of 18 and feels City Hall must Institute a better method of keeping track of Council Busi i would like to see a Type of Hansard established to record All the votes and debates to create a Public she its our Money and we should be Able to walk into City Hall and see All the financial i think the gang has been very instrumental in stopping this Type of who is running in his seventh said candidates at tacking the gang Are feeding a mis understanding of what the caucus is and what it does at City the in my has done an abysmal Job at recording votes and debates to see what we the gang Are has the City been so badly served by this group i can Tell you that the City has been Well if my record indicates something that is not then so be Skowron said he is much More interested in pursuing amendments to the provincial assessment act to create a better Appeal and in working to streamline City government to adjust for escalating costs of running while at the same time holding taxes to a reasonable Mitchelson Cassidy Thomas Unruh Skowron Miller East Kildonan Contact and indifferent to taxpayers con Michael an Independent candidate also in his first agreed Marshall has been too quiet for most for the last nine or 10 Transcona has been said a Manitoba Telephone system computer candidate condemns bully tactics Shirley Tim Rudolph is seeking another term As councillor in Springfield but to do so Shell have to get by a Veteran of the River East school division and a former City Peter a Veteran of school Board is making his first run for City he will run for both school trustee and said he dislikes the so called gang of the informal caucus in City and wants to take the bully tactics out of City in a father of five children so i know something about sandlot tac Graham Why these people have to gang up on anyone is beyond he said he wants to rid coun cil of conflicts in the tendering pro As Well As work for better Street and intersection conditions in his on the topic of the Graham said Tim Rudolph was a Prima Donna who didst seem interested in the needs of Springfield Heights Norm a City councillor for six years in the Early said his return to civic politics was fuelled by his decision to retire this year from his Job As an operations she Tim Rudolph said recycling and a system Are priorities for her in the next As Well As striking Down the gang of the gang Are just a Bunch of she Ive exposed them Down at City Hall and brought attention to their i think people Are really starting to see How City Hall is being the situation is somewhat differ ent in Miles where Anne Joro skis decision to step Down has made it the Only Ward in the East Kildonan Transcona Community committee area without an incumbent in the stepping in to fill the vacancy is Kornelius who in 1986 lost to Zorowski by 185 a chartered said he feels that a revitalized Campaign should push him Over the top this foggiest Ive got a much More organized Campaign this time around and bet Ter people he Loewen also said because of his professional he will be stressing greater fiscal account i come from the Angle of the chartered accountant and its my opinion that the average voter Hast got the foggiest idea about what the size of the City budget is or where Money the budget needs an honest look to make sure were getting full value for our joining Loewen Are Terry an environmental management consultant making his first run at City and Allen a magistrate at the Manitoba court of Queens Bench and a 25year Veteran of the River East school said he too will be concentrating on issues that coincide with his professional training As an the environment is something that obviously i will be he were losing our Green space to overzealous in also really interested in water Quality and said he will be focusing on environmental better police Protection and Street and Bridge improvements for the Rouse said he would also like to see much of the political wrangling that has gone on Over the last year removed from the civic Stapon Rouse their facts because i got it in very disappointed that a candidate would be spreading false Marshall also said he thought there was a need for consistent representation from we have had Rookie councillors in each of the last three elections and i dont think its time for the people of Transcona to elect another Rookie the challengers also take Issue with marshalls dual roles As councillor and trustee on the Transcona Springfield school although Marshall has decided to step Down As a trustee this Boychuk said the incumbent was in a conflict of interest several especially during the pc last the school Board was under fire for leaving Drums Laden with pcs in a shed close to a Boychuk suggested Marshall address the Situa Tion properly As a City councillor because he was on the school Marshall denies there was any but said he promised to step Down from the school Board and he will Honor that As a win who lost to Marshall in 1986 by 297 is also stressing a More accessible City government free of the gang of the informal caucus of City and secret Kendrick would like to see a face lift for Transcona business Section and better Street Access to the Down town drag strips Kendrick said traffic congestion on Transcona main routes Are making residential Back streets who is taking a leave of absence from the City clerks office to is touting his Many years of work behind
