involved wont make a difference following Are some accounts of Manitoban who have made a difference through their actions on environmental these Manitoban achieved re sults and Are from backgrounds As varied As the environmental issues from a concerned Parent fighting herbicides on school Yards to a prominent zoologist who has dedicated his life to studying the effects of the environment on Canadas d Kathleen Youngson while Youngson does not consider herself an environmental she says she has always been More interested than most people in environmental her once passive inter est kicked into Active in with a letter to the Winnipeg school the letter asked the school to ban the use on school property of two who has two Ages 8 and was concerned about the effects such herbicides could have on students As a result of the letter and lobbying by the Luxton Parent Council the school Board banned their usage on school grounds Gerry free press Kathleen Youngson wants City to ban All herbicides Dolecki two year fight Youngson says the ban pleases her very but says she is still concerned Over the school boards re cent application for a permit to Spray her ultimate besides getting a University degree in environmental is to persuade the City of Winnipeg to Stop using she is a member of a task Force which has urged such a ban in its Brief to City d Joe Dolecki an assistant professor of economics at Brandon describe himself As an in i am probably More of an he while questioning the practice of Labelling people based on their Dolecki is a founding member of scrap Stop construction of the Raffert Alameda project and one of the key players in bringing about a court order to halt construction on the Raffert Alameda dam pending an environmental Raffert Alameda involves construction of two reservoirs on the Souris River which flows from Saskatchewan into North Dakota and then the million project is being built to irrigate control Spring flooding and provide Cooling water for an electrical generating Dolecki became involved in the Issue after Reading a 1987 Saskatchewan environmental he says he was convinced the project was questionable in terms of tech Nical economically unfeasible and ecologically Dolecki says his training is Pri Marily in economic Public finance and resource econom it was the latter and his work with students in cos Benefit analysis that stirred his interest in Rafferty while pleased about the injunction halting construction and the appoint ment of an Independent environmental assessment Dolecki says his Job now is to preserve As much As possible with Teeth must be enacted to regulate the actions of Industry and the Public toward environmental How do you extend the life Cycle of the 1990s will see an Ever increasing focus on environmental concerns As we All become More aware of ecological and resource its an evolving process to better manage our environment and natural resources for the future of our both individual and corporate
